EPS or Intracardiac Electrophysiology Study is the placing of wire electrodes within the heart. It is done in order to read and determine the characteristics of heart arrhythmias. It can also discover the original factors that caused the arrhythmia and helps in studying the cells and tissues properly. RFA or Radiofrequency Catheter Ablation is used as a procedure to destroy the areas of the heart that are causing the arrhythmia in a selective manner.
The procedure involves inserting the catheter and carefully threading it to the heart by making an incision through the groin or neck. Anesthetics are used to numb the body parts. EPS involves the studying of the reasons of arrhythmia and discovering the areas causing it. The process of RFA is then used to kill those areas of defect. This process has been performed in India successfully with patients ranging from the age of 3 months to 95 years. Many major hospitals in India feature cardiologists, technicians and support staff who are well trained and highly successful to perform these procedures.
