An electrophysiology study (EPS) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) are two advanced cardiac procedures used to diagnose and treat problems with how the heart beats (arrhythmias). EPS identifies exactly what part of the heart is creating a problem by looking at different areas of the heart's electrical activity using special wires called catheters that are placed in a vein. Once the correct part of the heart is identified, a type of "heat energy" is directed at it to destroy ("ablate") the bad tissue causing the arrhythmia.
These two procedures are performed together and are done using either sedation or general anaesthesia, not open heart surgery, and the incision needed is small, only requiring a small puncture site. The impact of combining EPS/RFA is that many of the symptoms related to arrhythmias (such as palpitations, dizzy spells, or fainting) are greatly reduced or eliminated altogether, so patients may be able to stop taking arrhythmia medications altogether after having these procedures. The recovery time is typically short, and the success rate of EPS/RFA is generally very high, especially for those patients with supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), atrial flutter, and some types of ventricular arrhythmias.

EPS/RFA is usually performed for supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), atrial flutter, atrial tachycardia, Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome, and certain types of ventricular arrhythmias.
If you're just having an EPS procedure, it will typically take 1-2 hours. When an EPS procedure is performed at the same time as RFA, this procedure can take anywhere from 2-4 hours depending on how complicated the arrhythmia is.
Patients report only mild discomfort with catheter placement and ablation due to local anesthesia and sedation. A certain degree of discomfort may occur due to the puncture site after these procedures.
Most patients have returned to their daily lives in two to three days; the recommended abstention from vigorous exercise and heavy lifting is approximately one week.
The success of RFA therapy differs depending on the arrangement of arrhythmia. That said, the success rate, on average, of RFA therapy is between 85 and 95 percent, particularly for SVT and atrial flutter types of arrhythmia.
Although there are very little risks associated with EPS/RFA procedures, the most common possible risks include bleeding, infection, damage to the blood vessel, damage to the heart, or the reappearance of the arrhythmia. However, complications resulting from these procedures are very uncommon when performed by a well-trained electrophysiologist.
