Gastric bypass, also known as “Roux-en-Y” gastric bypass, is a weight-loss surgery procedure that involves creating a small stomach pouch and directly connecting it to the small intestine. Food bypasses most of the stomach and the initial part of the small intestine, facilitating weight loss. This surgery is often recommended when traditional weight loss methods like diet and exercise have been ineffective or when weight-related health issues are severe. It is among the most frequently performed bariatric surgeries.
Other popular weight loss surgery options include:
Of all the bariatric procedures, gastric bypass is the most preferred option for weight loss because of the greater possibility of positive outcomes. Furthermore, there are no other side effects of gastric bypass.
Gastric bypass surgery isn't suitable for everyone. individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher, and those with a history of heart disease, obesity, and obstructive sleep apnea, are prime candidates for this procedure. obesity, and obstructive sleep apnea are mostly recommended for gastric bypass surgery.
Most gastric bypass surgeries today are performed using laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical technique introduced nearly 30 years ago and now the standard of care. Laparoscopic surgery involves making three to five small incisions, each about half an inch, in the abdomen. These smaller cuts result in fewer complications, less bleeding, less pain, and faster recovery. Surgeons use long, narrow tools through these openings to perform the procedure.
While, In some cases, laparoscopic gastric bypass is performed with robotic assistance. Robotic surgery is still controlled by the surgeon, who uses a computer to maneuver robotic arms attached to the laparoscopic instruments.
steps:
All laparoscopic surgeries begin with a small "keyhole incision" in the abdomen. Through this initial incision, the surgeon inflates the abdominal cavity with carbon dioxide gas, creating space by separating the abdominal wall from the organs for better visibility.
Next, the surgeon inserts a tiny lighted video camera, called a laparoscope, through the keyhole to visualize the organs. The laparoscope projects images onto a computer screen. Additional small incisions are made to allow the surgeon to access and operate on the organs.
In the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, the first step is to divide the top portion of the stomach from the rest using a surgical stapler, creating a pouch about the size of an egg. The remainder of the stomach stays attached to the small intestine.
The second step involves cutting the small intestine several feet down its length and connecting the lower segment to the new stomach pouch. This allows food to pass directly from the stomach pouch into this lower section of the small intestine.
The final step is to reattach the upper segment of the small intestine to the lower trunk further down. This creates a "Y" shape: one branch from the stomach pouch and the other from the remaining stomach.
The right side of the "Y" is the new pathway for food, while the left side is the original upper part of the small intestine (duodenum). This section receives digestive juices from the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, which are then mixed with the food in the new intestinal trunk to enable proper digestion, although the shortened pathway absorbs fewer nutrients.
The patient will likely spend a day recovering in the hospital, and then a few weeks recovering at home before you feel ready to go back to work. the patient may also need to avoid strenuous activity for up to six weeks, and it may take up to twelve weeks to resume a normal diet.
