About the Breast Augmentation

The idea of youthfulness for women has been fairly associated with how well structured their breasts are. But with time and because of several other reasons, the breasts may start drooping. This may diminish physical appeal and self-confidence.

There are many women in the fashion and entertainment industry who often go for breast augmentation surgery or mammoplasty to enhance their appearance. Many other women who feel low due to small breast size or drooping breasts undergo breast augmentation to feel better.

Women with bigger breasts, on the other hand, may decide to undergo a breast reduction. Breast reduction is also known as reduction mammoplasty.

Some of the reasons why a woman may decide to undergo breast augmentation include the following:

  • Naturally smaller breast size compared to the body as per age
  • Breasts have grown smaller or have drooped after childbirth and breastfeeding
  • Due to rapid weight loss, the breasts have drooped down
  • One breast is significantly smaller compared to the other breast due to a congenital condition or any other kind of trauma.
  • During gender transition

Drooping breasts or small-sized breasts can be a real problem when it comes to wearing clothes. A woman may also feel uncomfortable due to the non-uniformity of the two breasts or may feel heavy at times.

Breast augmentation is the second most popular surgical procedure performed on women in the US.  Silicone implants or many other kinds of gel-filled or saline-filled implants are inserted in the breast pocket to augment their size and make it look fuller and appealing.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

  • A very simple process that does not require the patients to stay overnight
  • Morbidity and mortality rates are low
  • Enhances the overall beauty and appearance of a woman
  • Improves self-confidence
  • No visible scars left from the incision

How is Breast Augmentation performed?

Firstly, an incision is made in the skin covering the breast and the underlying tissue region. A pocket is created within the tissue region to place the breast implant.

All kinds of breast implants that are available have a filling material covered by an outer shell, which is composed of silicone elastomer. They are available in different shapes such as circular, oval directed projection-type or contoured-type. The latter types are called anatomic implants with tapering tips and fuller size at the bottom. The shape of these implants closely resembles the natural shape of the breasts of a fully grown mature woman.

The movement, weight, and feel of silicone gel-filled implants are very similar to that of natural breasts. The modern generation gel-type implants have a thick viscous fluid called a cohesive gel that always stays in place even if the outer shell gets damaged. Gel implants come pre-filled and sealed and as a result, they cannot be adjusted further in the operating room.

  • Silicone rubber shells are filled by surgeons with sterile salt water or saline in the operating room. If the implants start leaking, then saline used for an intravenous fluid of the body will be absorbed by the body without any harm. They are preferred because of their safety profile. The implants, in this case, are inserted empty by making a relatively smaller incision.
  • The surface of the implant can be smooth or textured. The texturing is important since it is thought that hardened scarring can be prevented around the implants. There will be lower chances of implant rupture since the textured surface is thicker. The implant also gets stabilized due to texturing, which is desired at times.
  • The pocket of the breast implants can be made in two positions. This is with respect to the pectoralis major muscle fascia, which is found deep in the breast or the breast tissue. When the pocket is made directly behind the breast tissue on top of the muscle fascia, then it is called subglandular placement. The advantage of this pocket is control of the shape of the breast and quick post-operative recovery. However, there remains a chance of seeing the edge of the implant under the skin.
  • In case of submuscular placement for implants, the pocket is made underneath the muscles of the chest wall. The contour of the breast looks smooth in this case as muscles hide the edges of the implants. There will be a lower chance of developing hard scars around the rim of the implant. Even nipple sensation is well protected.

Postoperative discomfort will be pertinent in this case. The recovery period can also be long in this case. The ability to have the upper breasts filled centrally will be less.

Recovery from Breast Augmentation

Recovery after breast enlargement depends on a number of factors such as the elasticity of the breast tissues, the size of the implant, position of the implant, and whether it is under or on top of the muscle. In case the implant has been placed on top of the muscle, pain is minimal and recovery period does not stretch beyond two days. A patient who has had implants placed under the muscle can experience some pain and may take longer to recover.

It is advisable to abstain from lifting activities or any other strenuous activity for the next two weeks. Retention of fluid and subsequent swelling can be avoided by doing so.

Keep taking the drugs prescribed by the surgeon but refrain from using them beyond the advised dosage even if the pain is bothering. Contact the surgeon immediately if you experience some other discomfort, including swelling, bleeding, fever, or inflammation.

Why should you opt for Breast Augmentation in Morocco?

Rabat and Casablanca, the two most prominent cities in Morocco are turning out to become a hub for cosmetic surgeries -  with the former known as administrative capital and the latter known as the economic capital of northern Africa. The plastic surgeons in this region have seen a surge in patients choosing to get cosmetic surgeries done. It has increased from an annual number of 80 to about 1200 to 1500 patients undergoing cosmetic surgeries, especially breast augmentation surgery in Morocco. To meet the increasing demand for this particular category of surgery, Morocco has made developments to dedicate infrastructures that specifically cater to plastic and cosmetic surgeries, mostly for the increasing number of medical tourists. Accordingly, the number of board-certified cosmetic surgeons have increased in number, most surgeons are qualified and obtain their training in Europe or the United States of America. Hence Morocco is an upcoming destination where one can undergo breast augmentation with qualified surgeons and advanced world-class facilities. French, English, Spanish, and Arabic are the languages widely spoken in this African nation, making patient and surgeon communication and counseling relatively easier than in other European countries. This country also has provisions for a patient’s children to be taken care of when he/she is under treatment which has made it a more feasible choice of destination for women.

What is the average cost of Breast Augmentation in Morocco?

Cosmetic procedures in Morocco could start from as low as 2500 dollars and go up to 8000 dollars. Breast implants are around 4000 dollars and the overall cost could highly vary from patient to patient based on the treatment approach and other factors like specialists involved, kind of implant that is being used, travel costs, etc.

What are the factors affecting the cost of Breast Augmentation in Morocco?

While Morocco is a relatively affordable country to get breast augmentation surgery done, here are some factors in general that you can keep in mind to assess the cost -

  • Taxes - The cost of cosmetic surgeries in Morocco is 3 times lower than that of other European countries such as Spain. The lack of value-added tax is one of the main reasons for the low cost.

  • Location - Morocco is very close to European countries, making it viable for a larger portion of the population to have a point of connection during their journey. It holds an open skies agreement with many European countries, making itself more accessible to most airlines having flight operations from plenty of European countries, including the low - cost airline companies. Therefore, traveling to Morocco is more affordable than one would imagine.

  • Procedure - Admittedly, the cost of the surgery would vary based on the approach. Some cases require only a breast lift while on the other hand, some might require both a lift and an implant procedure. Especially, in the case of implants, the type of material used would also affect the overall cost of the procedure and breast augmentation cost in Morocco. Silicone implants are more expensive than saline implants and the cost generally increases with the size of implants. Fat transfers are also an option but in certain cases, this could be a two-step procedure that in turn will drive up the cost of treatment. Between the two procedures, implants are the most preferred option. Some hospitals waive off the cost of implants, hence the choice of surgeon and facility can significantly affect the breast augmentation cost in Morocco.

What are the types/approaches to Breast Augmentation available in Morocco?

Breast augmentation procedures are performed to alter the shape and size of breasts as per patients’ cosmetic and functional requirements. The most commonly performed procedures are breast augmentation in Morocco. The augmentation techniques involve the following approaches based on patient criteria -

  1. Breast lift - this procedure involves an incision, repositioning, and contouring of breast tissue followed by closure. The incisions vary from patient to patient and would affect the level of scarring and the recovery time.

  • Inframammary or subpectoral incision - a popular choice of incision due to its discreet nature, the inframammary incision is made beneath the breast (in the breast fold).

    • Periareolar incision - also known as donut incision and most commonly used in the case of breast lift, this incision is made around the areola. Based on the requirement areolar incision could be extended into :

    1.  Lollipop incision: include an incision around the areola along with a vertical incision from the edge of the areola towards the bottom of the breast - forming a lollipop shape.

    2.  Anchor incision: the combination of ‘c’ shaped inframammary incision and the lollipop incision forming an anchor.

    • Transaxillary incision - it is made underneath the armpit from where the surgeon accesses or fills into or implants the breasts often through an endoscopic instrument.
    • Transumbilical incision - it is made at the belly button and the breast is accessed through an endoscopic instrument.

    2. Breast implants (surface) - Breast implants are made of silicone and are unusually concave patches that are inserted behind the breast tissue in order to accentuate the shape of the breasts. They come in round (commonly used) and teardrop-shaped (natural looking). Based on whether the patient requires a volume enhancement, the implants could be filled to give breasts the desired volume. This volume enhancement is known as a breast filler procedure. The fillers could be Silicon gel or Saline (saltwater). Saline is considered the safest among the two while the silicone gel gives a natural texture.

    3. Fat transfer -  this technique involves infusing breasts with fat from other parts of the body to obtain the desired shape and size. Usually, fat is removed from the patient's body part such as the thighs and abdomen through liposuction and infused in the breast area. This augmentation procedure is less commonly used when compared to implantation.
