Wrist Joint Replacement (Wrist Arthroplasty) is a surgical procedure where a damaged wrist joint is removed and replaced with an artificial one. This helps reduce pain caused by arthritis or injury, making it easier to move the wrist.
It is done when medicines or exercises don’t help enough. The surgeon removes the damaged parts of the wrist and replaces them with a new joint to strengthen and improve the wrist's function.

Thumb arthroplasty is performed to relieve pain and restore function in patients with severe arthritis, typically affecting the base of the thumb (carpometacarpal joint). It is most common in people with osteoarthritis who haven’t improved with conservative treatments. As the cartilage wears down, the exposed bones rub against each other, causing pain and a weakened grip. Surgery replaces or reconstructs the joint to restore movement and comfort.

In LRTI, the damaged bone at the base of the thumb is removed and replaced with a rolled tendon to provide cushioning. Some surgeons may opt for an artificial implant instead. The procedure usually takes place under regional or general anesthesia.
The surgery usually lasts 1 to 2 hours, depending on its complexity and the method used. It is often an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to go home the same day. A splint or cast is applied immediately after surgery to protect the thumb. Follow-up appointments are crucial for monitoring healing and initiating rehabilitation.

Thumb arthroplasty has a success rate of about 85% to 95%. Most patients experience long-lasting pain relief and improved thumb function. Proper rehabilitation and avoiding excessive thumb use during recovery are essential for achieving optimal results.
