The purpose of this operation is to remove any parts of the small bowel (small intestine) that are either damaged or malignant (harmful to one's health) due to:
- A blockage within the small bowel (a build-up of protein, fat or pieces of food blocking the continuing passage of materials along this organ)
- Malignant tumours in the small bowel (a tumour is made up of cancer cells that have spread throughout the body), pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
- Crohn's Disease (a disease causing an inflammatory reaction within the gut)
- Ischaemia (lack of blood flow to the area)
- Severe or persistent abdominal pain
- Recurrent vomiting or inability to pass stool
- Unexplained weight loss
- Blood in stools
- Chronic diarrhea or bowel obstruction symptoms
Preparation for this surgery will include testing for and preparing for, anaesthetic and blood type, X-ray, CT scan and MR scans, and bowel preparation. Prior to your procedure, your doctor may ask you to discontinue certain medications.
The surgery may be completed using an 'open' approach (an incision/procedure used for larger, more complex operations), or a 'laparoscopic' approach (using small instruments to perform the procedure with minimal incisions).
The time required to complete a small bowel resection ranges from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the complexity of the case and the surgical technique employed.

It includes the removal of diseased or obstructed bowel, relief of pain and digestive symptoms, improved nutrient absorption, and prevention of serious complications.
Each patient is monitored during recovery and will have the opportunity to gradually resume oral food intake, receive medical treatment for pain, care for their surgical site, and receive dietary counselling. A patient will fully recover within several weeks; during this time, routine follow-ups are conducted.
The short-term success rates of small bowel resections (SBR) are high (greater than 90% in young adults), however, significant long-term complications can also occur. For example, the risk of adhesive obstructions in SBR patients is approximately 3 years, with 3-year recurrence-free survival rates of 86% and 7-year rates of 61.5%.
