To remove all of the rectum or a portion of the rectum from patients who suffer from conditions like rectal cancer & severe inflammatory bowel diseases, trauma or severe infections.
If you experience any of these issues persistently (rectal bleeding, severe pain, bowel obstruction, unexplained weight loss, or other change in bowel habits not improving after treatment), please consult with your physician immediately.
Preparation to undergo surgery will include bowel cleansing the night prior (with an oral laxative), fasting prior to surgery, stopping certain medications, & undergoing pre-op tests. Additionally, your physician will provide instructions on your diet (the type of foods you can eat) & your lifestyle before surgery.
Proctectomy is performed under general anesthesia, with the removal of the diseased rectum and if your gastrointestinal tract is to be repaired or reconstructed after the removal of the rectum, or if an external bag (stoma) should be placed.
The time it takes to complete a proctectomy can vary, but it can take 2 - 4 hours to perform, depending on the surgical technique used and on the severity of the condition.

It includes the removal of the diseased or cancerous rectum completely, provides a definitive treatment for rectal cancer and severe rectal conditions, relieves symptoms such as bleeding, pain, and bowel obstruction, prevents the spread of cancer to nearby organs, and reduces the risk of recurrence in advanced disease, improves long-term survival outcomes, and eliminates chronic infection or inflammation.
You will be monitored in the hospital during your recovery, and then you will gradually return to an oral diet, will require continued pain control for a few days & will have wound care as instructed by your physician. It can take several weeks to recover completely from the proctectomy, with the first to sixth week of healing being the majority of time when a follow-up visit with your surgeon is scheduled, along with any lifestyle modifications based on your surgeon's recommendations.
The success rate of a proctectomy for different conditions varies depending on the severity of the condition & the surgical technique used, however, in general there is a high success rate (70%,) for patients after experiencing a proctectomy with regard to eliminating symptoms such as incontinence and with regard to the re-occurrence of rectal prolapse (8-10% for rectal prolapse).
