Thymectomy is the surgical removal of the thymus gland. It is commonly used to treat thymic malignancies (such as thymomas) or myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune condition.

A thymectomy is performed to treat conditions related to the thymus gland. These consist of neuroendocrine tumors, benign thymic tumors, thymomas, and myasthenia gravis. Through surgery, these disease' symptoms are lessened and complications are avoided.
