A lumpectomy, also referred to as breast-conserving surgery or partial mastectomy, is a surgical procedure aimed at removing a breast tumor along with a small margin of surrounding healthy tissue. The objective is to excise the cancerous or abnormal tissue while preserving as much of the breast as possible.
- Imaging: The radiologists mark the tumour so the surgeon can see it.
- Anaesthesia: It can be either local or general.
- Removal of Tumour: The surgeon removes the tumour and surrounding tissue.
- Pain management: To lessen discomfort following surgery, medication is injected.
- Lymph Node Biopsy: A sentinel node biopsy (SNB) is performed to check for cancer spread by removing a few lymph nodes from the armpit.
- Wound Closure: Dissolvable sutures are used to seal the incision.
- Reconstructive Surgery: The Breast may be reshaped immediately or later.
- The infection is close to the location of the incision.
- Collection of a transparent liquid (seroma).
- Collection of blood (hematoma).
- Radiation-induced scarring (radiation fibrosis).
- Swelling and bruises in the hand or arm nearest your breast (lymphedema).
- Chest, armpit, or arm shooting pain that usually goes away in a few weeks.
