A laser's heat is used during endovenous laser varicose vein surgery to minimize varicose veins. Veins that swell and bulge, commonly found on the thighs or calves, are called varicose veins. A laser is a device that emits a light-colored, narrow beam of radiation. Varicose veins are sealed and shrunk, and scar tissue is created inside the vessel after laser surgery. Thus, the vein is sealed off. The blood then travels through other veins in the vicinity.

Factors affecting the cost of Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) - Varicose Veins (Single Extremity):

  • Location and Facility: The cost of EVLT can be greatly impacted by the location and kind of medical facility where the treatment is carried out. Hospitals, outpatient surgery facilities, and private clinics may have different prices. Facilities with higher fees are typically found in urban areas or in areas where living expenses are higher.
  • Surgeon's price: A sizeable portion of the overall cost is attributed to the price assessed by the surgeon or interventional radiologist who performs the EVLT procedure. The reputation, experience, and degree of skill of the surgeon may also have an impact on their charges.
  • Costs associated with anesthesia: EVLT can be carried out under local anesthetic, sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on the patient's preferences and the intricacy of the treatment. The total cost of anesthesia includes the anesthesiologist's fee as well as any medications taken.
  • Diagnostic Exams and Consultations: To determine the amount and severity of varicose veins, patients may need to undergo diagnostic exams such as Doppler ultrasounds before EVLT. It could also be essential to consult with experts like interventional radiologists or vascular surgeons. The total cost is increased by the charges for these examinations and consultations.
  • Number of Sessions: Depending on the severity or recurrence of the varicose veins, several EVLT sessions may be necessary to treat them successfully. There are extra charges for the treatment, anesthesia, and aftercare with each extra session.
  • Geographical Location: As previously indicated, regional market conditions and geographic location can have a substantial impact on the price of healthcare services. EVLT prices can be influenced by variables such as local healthcare laws, provider competition, and local living expenses.

Endovenous laser varicose vein surgery is a medical procedure that uses laser-generated heat to treat varicose veins. These veins, which appear swollen and bulging, are commonly found on the thighs or calves. The laser, which emits a focused beam of light, is used to seal and shrink the problematic vein, inducing the formation of scar tissue inside the vessel. This scar tissue effectively closes the vein and diverts blood flow to associated healthy veins.

Why might someone need endovenous laser varicose vein surgery?

Endovenous laser varicose vein surgery might be recommended for various reasons. Your doctor may suggest this procedure if your varicose veins are painful, or if they are red and swollen (inflamed). Additionally, laser surgery might be advised if the skin over your varicose veins becomes irritated.

Although varicose veins are generally not a serious health issue, they can cause discomfort and pain. Many people also choose this treatment for cosmetic reasons, as they may be unhappy with the appearance of varicose veins.

Types

Following are the different types of Laser used in EVLT:

  • Continuous Wave Lasers
  • Pulsed Wave Lasers
  • Wavelength of the Laser

Endovenous thermal ablation treats medium to large varicose veins, which occur when damaged or weak valves cause blood to pool in veins. Some of the symptoms are leg cramps, soreness, heaviness, and itching. The surgery enhances comfort and looks better by rerouting blood to healthy veins and shrinking varicose veins.

You should consult a doctor If you have varicose veins in your legs that cause pain, swelling, heaviness, or changes in the skin.

As directed by your physician, stop taking blood thinners prior to endovenous thermal ablation. On the day of the surgery, refrain from applying lotions to your legs. Wear loose clothing and arrange for a ride home.

Through a tiny incision, a laser fiber is inserted into the damaged vein as part of endovenous laser treatment (EVLT). Blood is redirected to healthier veins as a result of the laser's heat delivery, which closes the vein. The procedure is minimally invasive and usually done under local anesthesia.

In most cases, endovenous thermal ablation takes 1 hour. The actual laser procedure takes 3-5 minutes.

  • Pain from tingling or numbness
  • Blood clots in the leg
  • Bruising

Compared to surgery, endovenous laser treatment has fewer side effects, less pain, less scarring, and superior cosmetic outcomes. A quicker recovery enables a quicker return to regular activity.

After the procedure, arrange a ride home and follow your provider’s recovery advice. Avoid strenuous activity and flying for two weeks, and stay active with light walking. You can typically return to work in a few days unless your job is physically demanding.

The success rate of endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) for varicose veins is high, usually between 95% and 98%.

Process Involved for Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) - Varicose Veins (Single Extremity)

  • Pre-operative management: Ultrasound mapping (varicose veins) before surgery demonstrates a standard blood test. Local anesthetic would be the usual one for anesthesia evaluation.
  • Surgery: A laser fiber is injected into the vein through a small incision to emit heat and seal the vein, redistributing blood flow into healthier veins. It takes approximately 30-60 minutes.
  • Post-operative recovery: 1-2 weeks of Compression stockings, minimal downtime, while symptoms dissolve gradually.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
  • Painful varicose veins.
  • Swollen or bulging varicose veins.
  • The patient has heaviness, aching, or cramping in the legs.
