Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) - Varicose Veins (Single Extremity): Symptoms, Classification, Diagnosis & Recovery

Endovenous laser varicose vein surgery is a medical procedure that uses laser-generated heat to treat varicose veins. These veins, which appear swollen and bulging, are commonly found on the thighs or calves. The laser, which emits a focused beam of light, is used to seal and shrink the problematic vein, inducing the formation of scar tissue inside the vessel. This scar tissue effectively closes the vein and diverts blood flow to associated healthy veins.

Why might someone need endovenous laser varicose vein surgery?

Endovenous laser varicose vein surgery might be recommended for various reasons. Your doctor may suggest this procedure if your varicose veins are painful, or if they are red and swollen (inflamed). Additionally, laser surgery might be advised if the skin over your varicose veins becomes irritated.

Although varicose veins are generally not a serious health issue, they can cause discomfort and pain. Many people also choose this treatment for cosmetic reasons, as they may be unhappy with the appearance of varicose veins.

Types

Following are the different types of Laser used in EVLT:

  • Continuous Wave Lasers
  • Pulsed Wave Lasers
  • Wavelength of the Laser

Before undergoing endovenous laser varicose vein surgery, a patient might have various signs and symptoms indicating the need for the procedure. These include:

  • Visible Varicose Veins.
  • Pain and Discomfort
  • Swelling
  • Skin Changes
  • Inflammation
  • Cramping and Restlessness
  • Ulceration
  • Bleeding

Before undergoing endovenous laser varicose vein surgery, several diagnostic tests and evaluations are typically performed to ensure the procedure is appropriate and to plan the treatment effectively. These include:

  • The doctor will perform a thorough physical examination of the legs, noting the appearance and condition of the varicose veins, and assessing for any signs of complications like skin changes, ulcers, or inflammation.
  • The doctor will review the patient’s medical history, including any previous treatments for varicose veins, underlying health conditions, and current medications.
  • Doppler Ultrasound is a major diagnostic test, especially for varicose veins. It uses sound waves to create detailed images of the veins, allowing the doctor to assess blood flow, vein structure, and the function of the valves within the veins. It helps identify the specific veins that need treatment and determines the best technique for the therapy.
  • Duplex Ultrasound combines traditional ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound. It generates comprehensive images of the veins and evaluates the speed and direction of blood flow, helping in the identification of any vein reflux (backward flow of blood) and locating the veins that are not functioning properly.
  • Venous Doppler Study is used to evaluate blood flow in the veins of the legs. It helps detection of any blood clots and determines the overall health of the venous system.

Endovenous laser varicose vein surgery recovery is short, allowing most patients to return to regular activities within a day or two of the procedure. Patients are frequently advised to wear compression stockings for a week or longer to help recovery and minimize edema. Mild soreness, bruising, and swelling at the treatment site are common and usually disappear within a few days. Regular medical follow-up appointments promote proper healing and address any complications promptly.
