Breast reconstruction surgery aims to restore breasts following a mastectomy. Various methods exist, including implant-based procedures or using tissue from other parts of the body, like the abdomen, to reconstruct the breast. This surgery can be performed immediately after a mastectomy or at a later time, often requiring multiple surgeries spread out over several months.
Breast reconstruction differs from other cosmetic procedures on the breast for example augmentation or reduction in that way that the former requires more planning and preparation and is done to restore the confidence of the woman suffering from this condition.
There are several ways by which breast reconstruction may be performed. The surgeon may use silicone implants or flap skin, fat, or muscles from the back, thighs, or arm to produce the tissue. Most often, a combination of these methods is used to reconstruct the breasts following a mastectomy or lumpectomy.
When Was Breast Reconstruction Surgery Required
Generally, Women most commonly require breast reconstruction after they have had surgery done to entirely or partially remove the breast tissue as a part of their cancer treatment.
Breast reconstruction can be performed soon immediately, after the completion of complete chemotherapy and radiotherapy, or even years later after the completion of breast cancer treatment.
If the woman is scheduled to have radiation therapy after breast cancer surgery, It is advisable to wait until the cancer treatment is completed before breast reconstruction is performed. If only chemotherapy is advised following the surgery, then reconstruction can be performed immediately after the breast cancer surgery.
It is entirely up to the wish of the woman and confidence in having the surgery performed and restoring the appearance of her restoring the appearance of breasts as much as possible. At the same time, it is important to set realistic expectations for the operation and to know that the reconstructed breasts may not be the same as the original breasts before breast cancer surgery
