Surgery to restore breasts following a mastectomy is known as breast reconstruction. There are various forms of reconstruction for the breast. Implants are used in some procedures. Some create breasts using your own bodily tissue (belly, for example). A mastectomy can be followed immediately by breast reconstruction or years later. Over months, you might require several procedures.

Factors affecting the cost of Breast Reconstruction Surgery:

  • Type of breast implant surgery: Breast reconstruction can be done in a variety of ways, including as implant-based reconstruction, flap reconstruction using autologous tissue, or a mix of the two. The patient's choice of reconstruction and the surgeon's recommendation have a big influence on the price.*
  • Cost of Implants (if applicable): The total cost of breast reconstruction surgery is influenced by the cost of the implants. The price of an implant varies depending on its material, size, form, and brand.
  • Flap Harvesting Site: To reconstruct the breast using autologous tissue (flap reconstruction), tissue is taken from another area of the body, such as the back, buttocks, or abdomen. The total cost of flap harvesting operation is influenced by its intricacy and length.
  • Surgeon's price: A substantial portion of the total cost is attributed to the price levied by the plastic surgeon who is doing the breast reconstruction procedure. The cost of a surgeon's services varies according on experience, specialization, region, and procedure complexity. Fees may be higher for board-certified plastic surgeons who have received specific training in breast reconstruction.
  • Anesthesia Fees: In order to keep patients comfortable and pain-free throughout breast reconstruction surgery, anesthesia is given. Whether anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist administers the anesthetic, costs related to both are part of the overall cost.
  • Facility Fees: The total cost of breast reconstruction surgery is influenced by the surgical facility's costs, which include nursing care, equipment rentals, and operating room fees. Hospitals with state-of-the-art amenities or specialized surgical centers could charge more than other types of facilities.
  • Pre-operative Evaluation: Prior to having breast reconstruction surgery, patients go through a pre-operative evaluation that includes a review of their medical history, a physical examination, and diagnostic testing (such as breast MRIs and mammograms), all of which add to the overall cost.
  • Post-operative Care: Patients need post-operative care, including wound care, medication, monitoring, and follow-up sessions, after breast reconstruction surgery. The total cost of treatment should account for the costs of post-operative care.
  • Procedures for Breast Symmetry: To increase breast symmetry and attain the best possible aesthetic results, it may occasionally be necessary to do additional procedures. The overall cost of breast reconstruction is increased by these operations, which include reduction on the contralateral breast or breast lift (mastopexy).
  • Geographic Location: The cost of healthcare varies by nation and location. Healthcare prices are typically greater in urban locations or in areas with higher cost of living, especially when it comes to cosmetic operations like breast reconstruction surgery.
  • Compression Garments: In order to reduce swelling, promote healing, and enhance outcomes following breast reconstruction surgery, patients may be required to wear compression garments. Included in the total cost should include the price of these clothes.
  • Supplements and Prescription Drugs: The overall cost of breast reconstruction surgery is increased by the prescription drugs and supplements that the physician recommends to control discomfort, avoid infection, and accelerate healing.

Breast reconstruction surgery aims to restore breasts following a mastectomy. Various methods exist, including implant-based procedures or using tissue from other parts of the body, like the abdomen, to reconstruct the breast. This surgery can be performed immediately after a mastectomy or at a later time, often requiring multiple surgeries spread out over several months.

Breast reconstruction differs from other cosmetic procedures on the breast for example augmentation or reduction in that way that the former requires more planning and preparation and is done to restore the confidence of the woman suffering from this condition.

There are several ways by which breast reconstruction may be performed. The surgeon may use silicone implants or flap skin, fat, or muscles from the back, thighs, or arm to produce the tissue. Most often, a combination of these methods is used to reconstruct the breasts following a mastectomy or lumpectomy.

When Was Breast Reconstruction Surgery Required

Generally, Women most commonly require breast reconstruction after they have had surgery done to entirely or partially remove the breast tissue as a part of their cancer treatment.

Breast reconstruction can be performed soon immediately, after the completion of complete chemotherapy and radiotherapy, or even years later after the completion of breast cancer treatment.

If the woman is scheduled to have radiation therapy after breast cancer surgery, It is advisable to wait until the cancer treatment is completed before breast reconstruction is performed. If only chemotherapy is advised following the surgery, then reconstruction can be performed immediately after the breast cancer surgery.

It is entirely up to the wish of the woman and confidence in having the surgery performed and restoring the appearance of her restoring the appearance of breasts as much as possible. At the same time, it is important to set realistic expectations for the operation and to know that the reconstructed breasts may not be the same as the original breasts before breast cancer surgery

Classification

There are two main types of breast reconstruction surgery:
