An angioplasty is a procedure used to open up narrowed or clogged coronary arteries and restore blood flow. The heart receives oxygen-rich blood from the coronary arteries. If one has coronary artery disease, a sticky film called plaque builds up in the coronary arteries. Calcium, cholesterol, and other chemicals found in the body combine to form plaque. After being carefully inserted into the artery to reach the blockage, a specially made catheter with a tiny balloon is inflated to expand the aperture and improve blood flow to the heart. To keep the artery open after the balloon is deflated and removed, a stent may be implanted during the process.

Angioplasty, also known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), is a procedure to improve blood flow in coronary arteries that have narrowed or blocked. Coronary arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart but in cases of coronary artery disease, plaque (a mixture of cholesterol, calcium, and other substances accumulates, leading to narrowing or complete blockage). Angioplasty works by widening the blocked portion of the artery, allowing for improved blood flow to parts of the heart that may have been deprived of oxygen.

What does an angioplasty treat?

The following are the conditions treated by the angioplasty:

  • Coronary Artery Disease: Coronary angioplasty, also known as percutaneous coronary intervention, aims to alleviate these blockages and restore proper blood flow to the heart.
  • Peripheral Artery Disease: In cases of atherosclerosis affecting the major arteries in the arms, legs, or pelvis, angioplasty is utilized to mitigate the blockages and enhance blood circulation to these regions.
  • Carotid Artery Disease: Angioplasty is beneficial in addressing blocked arteries in the neck, if left untreated, may precipitate a stroke due to inadequate oxygen supply to the brain.
  • Chronic Kidney disease: Renal artery angioplasty, can remove the plaque of the artery in the kidney.

Balloon angioplasty is done to widen narrowed or blocked arteries, typically in the heart (coronary arteries), to improve blood flow. It is commonly done in patients with coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, or following a heart attack.

A doctor should be consulted if chest pain persists or worsens; tiredness of unexplained origin is present; shortness of breath appears; and family history and/or existing illnesses pose a high risk. Emergency medical help should be sought without delay when symptoms of myocardial infarction manifest, such as chest tightness, unilateral arm or jaw pain, or cold sweats.

Fasting for 6–8 hours may be necessary. Give your doctor information about medications, allergies (such as to contrast dye), and bleeding disorders. Blood work, ECG, and imaging are performed beforehand.

A catheter with a small balloon at its tip is inserted into the blood vessel inside the body, usually in the groin or wrist. The catheter is then guided to the narrowed artery. Once in place, it is inflated, compressing plaque against the arterial wall to open the artery and restore blood flow. A stent, a small mesh tube, is frequently used to keep the artery open.

Balloon angioplasty can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the number and complexity of the blockages.

  • Bleeding
  • Allergic reaction to dye
  • Artery damage
  • Blood clots
  • Restenosis
  • Heart attack or stroke (rare)

The technique immediately alleviates chest pain and opens the arteries, potentially preventing heart attacks or bypass operations. The recuperation is faster than in open surgery.

Most patients recover quickly, with discharge within 24 hours. Light activities can typically be resumed after a few days, and full activity is permitted again after about a week. Patients are routinely placed on antiplatelet agents to avoid clotting while advising them not to attend cardiac rehabilitation for monitored exercise and education.

The success rate for balloon angioplasty exceeds 90%, particularly when combined with stenting. It reduces symptoms, improves blood flow, and enhances quality of life.

Process Involved for Balloon Angioplasty

  • Preoperative Evaluation Stage: Before the surgery, arterial blockages are evaluated, and imaging and tests verify the diagnosis.
  • Procedure Selection: Aside from setting up IV lines with cardiac monitors for ongoing monitoring, a local anesthetic is given at the insertion site.
  • Balloon Angioplasty Procedure: A stent is frequently inserted to keep the narrowed artery open after it has been widened with a catheter and balloon..
  • Post-Procedure Monitoring: The patient is kept under surveillance briefly in the hospital while vital signs and problems are tracked.
