Balloon Angioplasty: Symptoms, Classification, Diagnosis & Recovery

Angioplasty, also known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), is a procedure to improve blood flow in coronary arteries that have narrowed or blocked. Coronary arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart but in cases of coronary artery disease, plaque (a mixture of cholesterol, calcium, and other substances accumulates, leading to narrowing or complete blockage). Angioplasty works by widening the blocked portion of the artery, allowing for improved blood flow to parts of the heart that may have been deprived of oxygen.

What does an angioplasty treat?

The following are the conditions treated by the angioplasty:

  • Coronary Artery Disease: Coronary angioplasty, also known as percutaneous coronary intervention, aims to alleviate these blockages and restore proper blood flow to the heart.
  • Peripheral Artery Disease: In cases of atherosclerosis affecting the major arteries in the arms, legs, or pelvis, angioplasty is utilized to mitigate the blockages and enhance blood circulation to these regions.
  • Carotid Artery Disease: Angioplasty is beneficial in addressing blocked arteries in the neck, if left untreated, may precipitate a stroke due to inadequate oxygen supply to the brain.
  • Chronic Kidney disease: Renal artery angioplasty, can remove the plaque of the artery in the kidney.

Signs and symptoms that may indicate the need for balloon angioplasty include:

  • Angina
  • Shortness of Breath.
  • Fatigue
  • Heart Attack Symptoms
  • Palpitations
  • Dizziness or Fainting
  • Swelling
  • Decreased Exercise Tolerance

Several diagnostic tests may be carried out before a balloon angioplasty operation to evaluate the state of the veins or arteries and establish whether the surgery is necessary. The following are a few typical diagnostic procedures carried out before balloon angioplasty:

Angiography: It can be performed on various parts of the body, such as coronary angiography for the heart or peripheral angiography for the legs.

Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA): It is used to visualize the cross-sectional image of blood vessels.

Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA): It uses magnetic fields and radio waves to generate images of blood vessels.

Blood Tests: These tests can help identify risk factors for atherosclerosis and other conditions that may necessitate balloon angioplasty.

Following balloon angioplasty, patients spend a few hours under observation in a recovery area before discharge, though overnight stays may be necessary in some cases. Activity restrictions, such as avoiding strenuous activities, are common for several days post-procedure to aid healing. Medications to prevent blood clots and manage underlying conditions are often prescribed. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor recovery progress and assess the procedure's effectiveness. Lifestyle changes, including diet modifications and exercise, may be recommended to improve overall cardiovascular health and reduce future risks. Overall, while recovery is generally smooth, adherence to post-procedure instructions and regular follow-ups are essential for optimal outcomes.
