How Much Does Kidney Stone Removal Cost in Malaysia?

The cost of Kidney Stone Removal in Malaysia is USD 1000 - USD 5000

However, this cost can vary depending on several factors, including the type and severity of the condition, treatment techniques chosen, the healthcare facility's location and reputation, the treating professionals' experience and specialisation, and the patient's overall health status.

Additionally, factors like the duration of treatment, the need for follow-up care, and the use of advanced technologies or specialised treatments can further influence the overall cost.

Factors Influencing the Cost of Kidney Stone Removal:

  • Type of Procedure: The cost varies depending on whether the procedure is a non-invasive treatment or invasive surgery.
  • Hospital and Location: Hospitals in urban areas or those with higher operating expenses may charge more than rural hospitals.
  • Pre-Treatment Tests: Imaging tests (e.g., CT scan, ultrasound, X-rays) to identify the size, location, and type of kidney stone contribute to the overall cost of treatment.
  • Post-Treatment Care: The cost is increased by follow-up appointments, pain management, and other treatments needed following the procedure.
  • Length of Hospital Stay: Hospital stays may become more expensive due to complicated surgeries or complications.

Kidney stones (renal calculi) are hard deposits of minerals and salts inside the kidneys. The type of kidney stone and its cause determine the course of treatment. Numerous techniques, such as lithotripsy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, urethra and bladder urination, pain medication, and alpha-blockers, can be used to remove kidney stones.

Within three to six weeks, most kidney stones can go away on their own. The time it takes depends on the size and location of the stone.

Kidney stones, also known as renal calculi, nephrolithiasis, or urolithiasis, are hard deposits made up of minerals and salt that form inside the kidneys.

Although passing kidney stones can be very painful, they typically do not cause permanent damage if treated promptly. In many cases, drinking plenty of water and taking pain medication may be sufficient to pass the stones. However, if the stones become clogged in the urinary tract, cause a urinary infection, or lead to complications, surgical intervention are necessary.

“Ureteroscopy” is a medical procedure used to treat kidney stones. During the procedure, a small telescope known as a ureteroscope is passed through the urethra and bladder, and then up the ureter to reach the stone's location. Ureteroscopy is typically performed under general anesthesia and usually takes between one to three hours to complete.

The main types of surgery for removing kidney stones are:

  • shockwave lithotripsy (SWL)
  • ureteroscopy
  • percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL)

Kidney stone removal is performed when the stones become too large to pass naturally, cause extreme pain, obstruct the flow of urine, invite infection, or cause kidney damage. If treatment with conservative methods such as hydration and pain control does not help the patient, surgery may be recommended for stone removal.

Severe side or back pain, blurred vision, painful urination, frequent urge to urinate, nausea, or fever may indicate a kidney stone or the complications thereof. Should the rocks not pass or the symptoms exacerbate, a urologist will intervene for possible removal.

Blood and urine tests are often done, and imaging studies such as a CT scan or an ultrasound are ordered; medications like blood thinners may have to be stopped. Generally, fasting is required for several hours before surgery. The physician evaluates the patient based on the method selected for removal, whether laser, shock wave, or surgical.

Multiple methods are available for kidney stone removal, selected according to the size and location of the stone and the patient's condition. ESWL (Shock Wave Lithotripsy) is an external, non-invasive method wherein sound waves are generated to split the stones into small pieces that can pass through the body naturally. Ureteroscopy with Laser Lithotripsy would entail the insertion of a slender scope through the urethra to get closer to the stone and break it with a laser. PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) is performed via a small incision in the back for larger and more complex stones, to remove them directly.

The procedure lasts approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour for ESWL, and 1 to 2 hours for ureteroscopy.

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Injury to urinary structures
  • Incomplete stone removal
  • Recurrence

Stone removal can relieve pain and urinary obstruction and prevent kidney infection or damage. It also allows the patient to enjoy a quality of life and helps restore normal kidney function when the blockage is relieved.

The duration of recovery may vary depending on the technique employed. ESWL or ureteroscopy will allow the patient to return to normal activities within a few days. Aspiration full PNL, on the other hand, may require a 1- 2 week recovery. At these times, one might observe mild soreness, a little blood in the urine, or some urinary urgency. Good hydration and follow-up imaging are essential.

Kidney stone removal has a high success rate, over 90% if performed appropriately and followed adequately. Stone analysis and preventive care become paramount in diminishing recurrences.
