International Quality. Affordable Care.

Renal calculi, nephrolithiasis, and urolithiasis are other names for kidney stones, which are hard deposits of minerals and salts that develop inside your kidneys.

Kidney stones can be caused by a variety of factors, including diet, obesity, certain medical disorders, and certain drugs and supplements. Any portion of your urinary tract, including your kidneys and bladder, might be impacted by kidney stones. When urine concentration increases, minerals can crystallize and adhere to one another, resulting in the formation of stones.

Factors affecting the cost of Kidney Stone Removal:

  • Choice of Hospital: Before receiving any medical care, it's critical to choose the best healthcare facility. Any hospital's cost structure for treating kidney stones differs based on its type (private or public), amenities, and room style (deluxe or ultra deluxe), among other factors. A quality hospital guarantees a high success rate while reducing the cost load.
  • Fee for Urologist Consultation: The cost is often determined by the number of successful kidney stone procedures performed and the urologists' experience.
  • Cost of Diagnostic procedures: To identify whether stones are present, urologists often advise a variety of diagnostic procedures. Depending on the size, position, and quantity of stones, diagnostic testing assists the urologist in selecting the best course of action. The cost of kidney stone laser therapy is increased overall by the testing.
  • Cost of anesthesia: To guarantee minimal discomfort during the kidney stone procedure, the patient is given anesthetic before the procedure. This is the reason why local spinal anesthesia or general anesthesia is used during kidney stone removal surgeries. The total cost of kidney stone surgery may be impacted by the type of anesthesia, which might vary in price depending on whether it is spinal, local, or general.
  • Technique used for removing kidney stones: Kidney stone removal can be accomplished by four different methods. Modern kidney stone treatments often use minimum invasion, laser methods, and external shockwaves. The price of various kidney stone treatments varies based on the city and the methods employed.

Kidney stones, also known as renal calculi, nephrolithiasis, or urolithiasis, are hard deposits made up of minerals and salt that form inside the kidneys.

Although passing kidney stones can be very painful, they typically do not cause permanent damage if treated promptly. In many cases, drinking plenty of water and taking pain medication may be sufficient to pass the stones. However, if the stones become clogged in the urinary tract, cause a urinary infection, or lead to complications, surgical intervention are necessary.

“Ureteroscopy” is a medical procedure used to treat kidney stones. During the procedure, a small telescope known as a ureteroscope is passed through the urethra and bladder, and then up the ureter to reach the stone's location. Ureteroscopy is typically performed under general anesthesia and usually takes between one to three hours to complete.

The main types of surgery for removing kidney stones are:

  • shockwave lithotripsy (SWL)
  • ureteroscopy
  • percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL)

Kidney stone removal is performed when the stones become too large to pass naturally, cause extreme pain, obstruct the flow of urine, invite infection, or cause kidney damage. If treatment with conservative methods such as hydration and pain control does not help the patient, surgery may be recommended for stone removal.

Severe side or back pain, blurred vision, painful urination, frequent urge to urinate, nausea, or fever may indicate a kidney stone or the complications thereof. Should the rocks not pass or the symptoms exacerbate, a urologist will intervene for possible removal.

Blood and urine tests are often done, and imaging studies such as a CT scan or an ultrasound are ordered; medications like blood thinners may have to be stopped. Generally, fasting is required for several hours before surgery. The physician evaluates the patient based on the method selected for removal, whether laser, shock wave, or surgical.

Multiple methods are available for kidney stone removal, selected according to the size and location of the stone and the patient's condition. ESWL (Shock Wave Lithotripsy) is an external, non-invasive method wherein sound waves are generated to split the stones into small pieces that can pass through the body naturally. Ureteroscopy with Laser Lithotripsy would entail the insertion of a slender scope through the urethra to get closer to the stone and break it with a laser. PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) is performed via a small incision in the back for larger and more complex stones, to remove them directly.

The procedure lasts approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour for ESWL, and 1 to 2 hours for ureteroscopy.

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Injury to urinary structures
  • Incomplete stone removal
  • Recurrence

Stone removal can relieve pain and urinary obstruction and prevent kidney infection or damage. It also allows the patient to enjoy a quality of life and helps restore normal kidney function when the blockage is relieved.

The duration of recovery may vary depending on the technique employed. ESWL or ureteroscopy will allow the patient to return to normal activities within a few days. Aspiration full PNL, on the other hand, may require a 1- 2 week recovery. At these times, one might observe mild soreness, a little blood in the urine, or some urinary urgency. Good hydration and follow-up imaging are essential.

Kidney stone removal has a high success rate, over 90% if performed appropriately and followed adequately. Stone analysis and preventive care become paramount in diminishing recurrences.
