Wrist Joint Replacement (Wrist Arthroplasty) is a surgical procedure that repairs or replaces a damaged wrist joint, often caused by arthritis or injury, resulting in pain and limited movement.
In this surgery, the surgeon removes the damaged joint parts and either inserts an artificial implant or reconstructs the joint using tissue from nearby areas. The primary goal is to alleviate pain and enhance thumb function.
After the operation, patients usually experience better thumb use for everyday tasks and increased hand strength. Recovery involves physical therapy to restore movement and strengthen the thumb.
Wrist joint replacement, or wrist arthroplasty, is done to ease chronic wrist pain, restore motion, and improve function in people with severe arthritis or joint damage. It is usually considered when treatments like medications, braces, and therapy do not provide relief. The procedure is beneficial for patients with rheumatoid arthritis or post-traumatic arthritis. It allows for smoother wrist movement and a better quality of life.

Wrist arthroplasty has a success rate of 85 to 90% for pain relief and functional improvement. Long-term results depend on the patient’s activity level and commitment to rehabilitation. Modern implants can last 10 to 15 years or more, especially with low-impact lifestyles. Revision surgery is rare but may be needed if the implant loosens or fails.
