IMRT is a type of radiation therapy applied to treat cancer by providing targeted, high-dose radiation to tumors while avoiding surrounding healthy tissue. IMRT is frequently used for head and neck cancers, prostate cancer, brain tumors, breast cancer, and pelvic cancers, particularly where tumors are close to vital structures.
You need to consult an oncologist if you have a cancer diagnosis and radiation forms part of your treatment. IMRT may be advised when standard radiotherapy carries a high risk to surrounding organs, or when high-precision treatment is required to optimise outcomes and minimise side effects.
Before initiating IMRT, you will have imaging tests (CT, MRI, or PET scans) for planning. Imaging scans evaluate the size and shape of the tumor. They are delivered in a daily session (fraction) over a few weeks. Each session involves lying still on a table while the machine rotates around you, aiming at the tumor from many different angles.
Each IMRT treatment session lasts 10–30 minutes, although most of that time is spent on setup and alignment. Treatment may take 5 to 7 weeks and is given 5 days per week.
