A subtotal proctocolectomy is done to completely remove the Colon and Rectum that has been severely damaged by Inflammation, Cancer, Polyps and/or is at significant risk of being life-threatening.

A subtotal proctocolectomy will be performed under General Anaesthesia, typically using minimally invasive techniques. The surgeon will cut out the Colon and Rectum, and will most likely create either a stoma or an internal pouch to allow for continued elimination of waste products.
A patient preparing for a subtotal proctocolectomy will be required to complete several tests to ensure medical fitness for surgery, including bowel preparation, laboratory tests, MRI, and Colonoscopy. A patient should stop eating and drinking, as well as taking certain prescription medications, as directed by the surgeon.

Overall, success is defined as the patient's satisfaction with the functional outcome of the procedure, specifically the avoidance of a permanent stoma and/or the achievement of bowel function that meets the patient's acceptable standards.
