Colorectal surgery can be performed to treat disease or injury of the colon, including colon cancer, as well as conditions such as diverticulitis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, bowel obstruction, and severe colonic infection.

The surgeon removes the affected segment of the colon and reconnects the two healthy ends. The surgery can be performed by open, laparoscopic, or robotic technique under general administration of anesthesia.
A partial colectomy will last 2 to 5 hours, depending on the complexity of the condition being treated and the Technique used.
