How Much Does CABG - Redo Cost in Vietnam?

The cost of CABG – Redo (Repeat Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting) in Vietnam typically ranges between USD 10000 - USD 20000. However, the final cost may vary depending on several factors, including the complexity of the existing heart condition, the number of required grafts, the patient’s prior cardiac surgeries, the surgical technique used, and the reputation and location of the healthcare facility.

Additionally, the ICU stay duration, need for advanced monitoring, diagnostic tests, medications, and post-surgery rehabilitation can significantly influence the overall cost.

Factors Influencing the Cost of CABG - Redo

  • Complexity of the Procedure: Redo CABG is more complex than the first bypass surgery. Scar tissue from earlier surgeries, the condition of prior grafts, and the severity of blockages can affect operative difficulty and overall cost.
  • Hospital and Location: Leading heart centres in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City generally charge more due to advanced cardiac infrastructure, modern ICU systems, and high surgical standards. Private international hospitals tend to be more expensive than government cardiac institutes.
  • Surgeon’s Expertise: Redo bypass surgery requires highly skilled and experienced cardiothoracic surgeons. Professionals who specialise in high-risk cardiac procedures or have extensive international training may charge higher fees.
  • Pre-Surgery Diagnostic Tests: Extensive testing is needed before redo CABG, including ECG, echocardiography, coronary angiography, CT scans, and blood tests. These evaluations ensure accurate planning and add to the total cost.
  • Post-Surgical ICU and Hospital Stay: Patients typically require longer ICU monitoring and extended hospitalisation due to the complexity of the procedure. These extended stays significantly impact total medical expenses.
  • Post-Surgery Care & Rehabilitation: Cardiac rehabilitation, medications, follow-up consultations, lifestyle counselling, and physiotherapy sessions are essential for optimal recovery. These services contribute to the final cost.

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is performed to address coronary artery disease (CAD), which occurs when the coronary arteries become narrowed due to the accumulation of fatty material within their walls. These arteries are responsible for supplying oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle. As CAD progresses, it restricts the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart, potentially leading to various heart-related complications.

Traditionally, to bypass a blocked coronary artery, surgeons would make a large incision in the chest and temporarily stop the heart. The breastbone (sternum) is then split lengthwise and spread apart to access the heart. Tubes are inserted into the heart to allow blood to be pumped through a heart-lung bypass machine, which maintains circulation while the heart is stopped.

While this traditional open-heart procedure is still commonly performed and may be preferred in many cases, less invasive methods have been developed. Off-pump procedures, introduced in the 1990s, eliminate the need to stop the heart. Additionally, minimally invasive techniques like keyhole surgery (using small incisions) and robotic-assisted procedures (utilizing a mechanical device) offer alternative approaches for bypassing blocked coronary arteries.

Why one might need CABG?

it is necessary to address blockages or narrowing in one or more coronary arteries. When nonsurgical treatments are not viable options, CABG becomes essential to restore proper blood flow to the heart muscle.

Frequently Asked Questions

CABG - Redo is a repeat coronary artery bypass surgery performed when earlier grafts fail or when new blockages develop in the coronary arteries. It is recommended for patients with recurrent angina, narrowed grafts, vein graft disease, or severe coronary artery blockages not manageable through stenting.

Redo CABG is performed under general anaesthesia. The surgeon carefully reopens the chest, avoiding previous grafts and scar tissue, and creates new bypass routes using arteries or veins. These new grafts allow blood to flow to the heart muscle, improving heart function and relieving symptoms.

Redo CABG is more complex than primary surgery and may involve risks such as bleeding, infection, graft failure, stroke, heart rhythm issues, or prolonged recovery. However, with experienced surgeons and modern cardiac care units, complications are significantly reduced.

Most patients spend around 5 -7 days in the hospital, including ICU monitoring. Full recovery may take 6-12 weeks, depending on the patient's health, age, and adherence to cardiac rehabilitation.

Additional expenses may include pre-surgery tests, ICU charges, anaesthesia, medications, physiotherapy, cardiac rehabilitation, follow-up check-ups, and medical supplies. International patients must also consider travel, accommodation, and interpreter services if needed.

Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are the top cities for advanced cardiac hospitals, experienced cardiothoracic surgeons, and comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation programs. Da Nang is emerging but has fewer specialised cardiac centres.

Vietnam offers cost-effective cardiac care with modern technology, skilled heart surgeons, high-quality ICU facilities, and fast treatment timelines. Patients benefit from advanced cardiac surgery options at prices significantly lower than many Western and Asian countries.

The success rate is high, especially in leading cardiac centres, with most patients experiencing improved heart function, relief from chest pain, and enhanced long-term quality of life. Outcomes are best when followed by proper rehabilitation and lifestyle modifications.
