How Much Does Hypospadias Surgery Cost in Vietnam?

The cost of Hypospadias Surgery in Vietnam typically ranges between USD 1500 - USD 4000.

The final cost depends on the severity of the condition (distal, mid-shaft, or proximal hypospadias), the surgical technique used, whether the repair is single-stage or multi-stage, hospital selection, and post-operative care requirements.

Factors Influencing the Cost of Hypospadias Surgery

  • Severity and Type of Hypospadias: Distal hypospadias (near the tip) is usually less complex and less expensive, while proximal or severe hypospadias may require advanced reconstruction and sometimes staged surgeries, increasing overall cost.
  • Surgical Technique Used: Techniques such as TIP (Tubularized Incised Plate), onlay flap repair, or staged urethroplasty vary in complexity. More advanced or multi-stage procedures cost more.
  • Hospital and Location: International private hospitals and specialised paediatric urology centres in cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City generally charge higher fees due to advanced infrastructure, specialised nursing care, and better post-operative monitoring.
  • Surgeon’s Expertise: Highly experienced paediatric urologists or reconstructive surgeons, especially those trained internationally, may charge higher professional fees due to their expertise and higher success rates.
  • Pre-Surgical Evaluation: Diagnostic tests such as physical examination, blood tests, urine tests, ultrasound, and anaesthesia assessment are required prior to surgery and contribute to the total cost.
  • Post-Surgical Care and Hospital Stay: Hypospadias surgery usually requires 1–3 days of hospitalisation. Costs may increase if extended monitoring, catheter care, medications, or follow-up visits are required.

Hypospadias repair is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the urethra's positioning on the penis. The surgery can be either one or two stages, determined by the severity of the condition, and typically lasts up to two hours. Potential risks associated with the procedure include bruising, infection, swelling, fistulas, and possible shortening of the penis. However, most individuals achieve full recovery within six weeks.

Hypospadias is a congenital condition where the urethra, the tube responsible for urination and ejaculation, doesn't properly develop in the penis. The opening of the urethra, also known as the meatus, is usually located at the tip of the penis. However, in babies with hypospadias, the meatus may form in a different location, such as near the head of the penis (subcoronal), along the shaft (midshaft), or where the penis and scrotum meet (penoscrotal). Additionally, children with hypospadias may also have congenital penile curvature (chordee) and penoscrotal transposition, where the scrotum forms above the penis. Correction of these conditions may be necessary as determined by the child's healthcare provider.

Who should undergo Hypospadiasis?

If your child has hypospadias, their doctor recommends a hypospadias repair when they are between six months and two years old. However, as the parent, you have the final decision on whether your child will undergo the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hypospadias is a congenital condition present at birth. Surgery is usually recommended between 6 and 18 months of age, although older children and adults can also undergo corrective surgery successfully.

The surgeon reconstructs the urethra to bring the opening to the tip of the penis, corrects any penile curvature, and reshapes the foreskin or performs circumcision if required. The procedure is done under general anaesthesia.

Yes. Hypospadias surgery is considered safe when performed by experienced paediatric urologists. Complications are uncommon and manageable with proper surgical technique and post-operative care.

Initial recovery usually takes 1-2 weeks. Complete healing occurs over several weeks, and follow-up visits are necessary to monitor urinary function and wound healing.

Potential complications include urethral fistula, narrowing of the urethra, infection, bleeding, or cosmetic concerns. The risk is low when skilled specialists perform surgery.

Vietnam has several reputed hospitals with paediatric urology services, especially in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. International hospitals and children’s speciality centres are preferred for complex cases.

Additional expenses may include diagnostic tests, medications, extended hospital stay if needed, follow-up consultations, travel, accommodation, and interpreter services.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are the best cities because they offer specialised paediatric urologists, advanced hospitals, and comprehensive post-operative care facilities.

Vietnam offers high-quality surgical care, experienced paediatric specialists, modern medical facilities, shorter waiting times, and cost-effective treatment compared to many other countries.
