A surgical treatment called hypospadias repair corrects hypopadias. The congenital disorder known as hypospadias causes your urethra—the tube that exits your body when you urinate—to develop improperly in your penis. Usually, the meatus is located at the tip of the penis. Your child's doctor will usually advise a hypospadias repair between six months and two years after birth if your child has the condition. You, as their parent, get to decide whether or not your child gets the fix.

Factors that affect the cost of Hypospadias Surgery:

  • Type and degree of Hypospadias: The surgical treatment required to correct hypospadias will vary in complexity depending on the type and degree of the problem. More severe cases might need more extensive surgery, which could increase the expense, whilst milder cases might only need less intrusive operations.
  • Surgical Technique: Several surgical procedures, such as straightforward tubularization, tubularized incised plate (TIP) repair, and phased repairs requiring several surgeries, are utilized to treat hypospadias. The length of the operation, the amount of competence needed, and the related expenses will all depend on the surgical approach selected.
  • Surgeon's costs: A portion of the total cost will come from the costs the surgeon charges for the hypospadias operation. The cost of a surgeon may differ depending on experience, area of specialization, and location.
  • Hospital Fees: A major factor in the overall cost of the surgery is the fees that the hospital or medical facility charges. This covers the cost of the recovery area, operation room, hospital stay, medical supplies, and any other resources used in the process.
  • Fees for anesthetic: The type of anesthetic utilized and the length of the treatment will determine the cost of anesthesia, which is necessary for the surgery. This category will contain anesthesiologist fees as well as costs for anesthesia medications and monitoring apparatus.
  • Preoperative Evaluation: Before having hypospadias surgery, patients usually go through many preoperative assessments, such as imaging exams, blood tests, and specialist consultations. These assessments will come with an additional cost on top of the total.
  • Postoperative Care: Patients requiring hypospadias surgery need postoperative care, which includes hospital monitoring, medication, and follow-up sessions. The price of these services will go toward the procedure's overall cost.
  • Complications and other Procedures: Occasionally, issues may develop during or during surgery, requiring other treatments or operations. Managing problems and any more procedures will raise the overall cost of care.
  • Geographical Location: Depending on the hospital's or clinic's location, the cost of medical operations may differ. Hospitals that perform surgery for hypospadias may charge more in urban areas or in areas with a greater cost of living than in rural ones.

Hypospadias repair is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting the urethra's positioning on the penis. The surgery can be either one or two stages, determined by the severity of the condition, and typically lasts up to two hours. Potential risks associated with the procedure include bruising, infection, swelling, fistulas, and possible shortening of the penis. However, most individuals achieve full recovery within six weeks.

Hypospadias is a congenital condition where the urethra, the tube responsible for urination and ejaculation, doesn't properly develop in the penis. The opening of the urethra, also known as the meatus, is usually located at the tip of the penis. However, in babies with hypospadias, the meatus may form in a different location, such as near the head of the penis (subcoronal), along the shaft (midshaft), or where the penis and scrotum meet (penoscrotal). Additionally, children with hypospadias may also have congenital penile curvature (chordee) and penoscrotal transposition, where the scrotum forms above the penis. Correction of these conditions may be necessary as determined by the child's healthcare provider.

Who should undergo Hypospadiasis?

If your child has hypospadias, their doctor recommends a hypospadias repair when they are between six months and two years old. However, as the parent, you have the final decision on whether your child will undergo the procedure.

Hypopadias surgery is done to fix the irregular positioning of the urethral opening on the underside of the penis. It aims to restore normal urinary function, improve appearance, and enable normal sexual function. Potential issues with fertility or urine are also avoided with the operation.

You should consult a physician if you have problems urinating i.e painful urination, if the urethral opening or penis appears noticeably odd, if you get repeated UTIs, or if your child develops sexual dysfunction as the child grows.

Your child's physician will inspect the penis, including the position of the urethral opening and any curvature, and evaluate your child's general health before hypopadias treatment. If necessary, they might do tests like urethrograms or cystoscopies. Inform them of any medications or allergies, as certain drugs can increase the risk of bleeding. You will be given particular fasting instructions and advice on staying calm before the commencement of surgery.

A pediatric urologist performs hypospadias surgery alongside a specialised medical team that includes a nurse and an anesthesiologist. While the child is sedated under general anesthesia, the urologist moves the meatus to the tip of the penis by using a knife to remove a part of the foreskin and produce a longer urethra. A catheter is inserted to help maintain the urethra’s shape during healing. Dissolvable stitches are used to close the incisions.

Hypopadias repair could take 2-3 hours.

  • Pain when peeing.
  • Pain in the testicles or lower back.
  • Lumps or hard spots on the penis.
  • Discomfort during sex
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Mass of clotted blood
  • Swelling
  • Bruising

  • It allow for normal peeing and ejaculation after reconstruction of child's urethra
  • Straightening their penis
  • Improved appearnce

Children often feel tired and sleep more in the days following hypospadias repair, which aids recovery. In most cases, swelling and bruises go away in two weeks. Although recovery times can vary, most kids recover completely in roughly six weeks.

The majority of research show that hypopadias correction surgery has a high success rate, with results ranging from 80% to 95%.
