A hemicolectomy is a surgical procedure classified as a type of colectomy, involving the removal of a portion of the colon (large intestine). A left hemicolectomy refers to the surgical removal of the left portion of the colon, which usually includes the descending and transverse colon in part. The carriage of colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, left-sided colonic polyps, or a bowel obstruction on the left side of the colon is the standard setting in which this is performed.

Then, the healthy ends of the colon are reconnected (anastomosed), and drains may be inserted if needed.
