About the Laminectomy

Laminectomy is also known as “decompression surgery”. In this surgical procedure, a part of the vertebral bone called lamina is removed to create additional space. The lamina is the back part of the vertebrae that covers the spinal canal. Removing the lamina enlarges the spinal canal and thus, helps relieve pressure on the nerves and the spinal cord. Bony growths, especially in people with spinal arthritis, may put additional pressure on the spinal cord. It may cause severe back pain and in some severe cases, can even cause paralysis. Narrowing of the space between the vertebrae is also known as spinal stenosis.

Laminectomy surgery, which is a form of spinal stenosis treatment, helps relieve pressure on the spinal cord and the nerves by creating a room between the vertebrae and the cord. When the pressure on the spinal cord in the case of lumbar spinal stenosis is relieved by creating a space between the lumbar vertebrae, the procedure is known as a lumbar laminectomy. During a lumbar laminectomy, the surgeon may even remove the ligaments or bone spurs pressing the spinal cord.

Before considering a laminectomy, individuals may experience symptoms related to spinal stenosis, herniated discs, or other conditions that lead to pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.

How is Laminectomy performed?

Laminectomy is typically done with general anesthesia, meaning you're unconscious during the procedure. The surgical team keeps an eye on your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels throughout. Once you're asleep and can't feel anything:

The surgeon makes a cut in your back over the affected area, moving muscles away to reach the spine. They use small tools to remove bone spurs and just the necessary amount of lamina. The incision size depends on your condition and body size, with minimally invasive surgeries using smaller cuts.

If the laminectomy is part of treating a herniated disk, the surgeon also removes the herniated part and any loose pieces (diskectomy). For issues like a slipped vertebra or spine curvature, spinal fusion may be necessary to stabilize the spine. This involves permanently connecting two or more vertebrae after removing arthritic joints. Bone grafts and, if needed, metal rods and screws may be used. Depending on your situation, the surgeon might use a smaller incision (minimally invasive) and a special microscope for the operation.

Recovery from Laminectomy

Laminectomy surgery takes anywhere between two to three hours to complete. The loss of blood during the surgery is minimal. Shortly after the surgery, the patient is moved to the recovery room. After a few hours, the patient is transferred to the normal hospital room. The patient can expect the following things after the surgery:

  • You will be asked to lie on your side.
  • A catheter may be placed to drain the bladder.
  • Pain may be there for a few days. However, it is managed with the help of painkillers.
  • Compression stockings or compression boots may be advised to prevent the formation of blood clots in the legs.
  • You will be asked to start walking after a few hours of the surgery.
  • You will be advised to perform certain breathing exercises, tighten the abdominal muscles to support the spine, and always bend at the hip after the surgery.

The timeline for returning to work varies, influenced by the demands of your job. Depending on factors like lifting, walking, and sitting requirements, some individuals may find themselves back at work within a few weeks. However, if your procedure also involves spinal fusion, a more extended recovery period may be necessary.

Remember, adherence to post-surgery instructions is key. These guidelines, coupled with regular follow-up appointments, contribute to a well-managed recovery process. Factors such as age, overall health, and the extent of the surgery all play a role, making each individual's recovery unique. Open and ongoing communication with your healthcare team ensures that your questions and concerns are addressed throughout this recovery journey.

What is Laminectomy?

Laminectomy is a common surgical procedure for spinal problems. In this procedure, a skilled spine surgeon will take out a small section of your bone from the lower spine. This small section often called a lamina is small species of bone that overgrows from the spine. This procedure is most commonly performed in the lower spine named lumbar laminectomy. However, sometimes it may also be performed in the neck known as a cervical laminectomy, or the middle back known as a thoracic laminectomy. The removal of the lamina from the spine can remove the pressure from the compressed nerves of the spinal cord, and improve quality of life and function.

What are the symptoms of Lumbar Laminectomy?

Laminectomy is often performed to treat a spinal condition known as spinal stenosis. This procedure is performed to narrow the spinal column by removing the damaged disks and extra growth in the spinal bones resulting in more room for your spinal nerve and column. The symptoms may include:

  • Loss of sensation or pain in one or both legs.
  • Discomfort near the shoulder blades.
  • Heaviness or feeling flimsy around your legs or buttocks.
  • Problem controlling the bladder and bowel movements.
What are the benefits of this surgery?

The overgrowing bony structure in the spine can lead to a build-up of pressure on the nerves in the spinal canal. The narrowed space for the nerves and spinal cord is responsible for this pressure build-up that can further lead to symptoms like pain, weakness, and numbness that can move down to the arms or legs of the patient. As the laminectomy procedure helps in relieving this pressure and creates space in the spinal canal it will eliminate the radiating pain.

How to take care after a Laminectomy?

Following your laminectomy, you can anticipate the following at home:

  • Be prepared for some severe pain that might necessitate taking powerful painkillers. Using these medications while driving is not advised, therefore you will be advised to avoid driving for a while. Most people are able to get back to driving in one to two weeks; your surgeon will let you know when it is safe to do so.
  • After your laminectomy, you must restrict your activities that require bending, stooping, or lifting for a number of weeks.
  • Additionally, you must keep the incision site dry and clean. Find out how to shower and bathe from your doctor.
  • After about two weeks, your doctor will remove any stitches or staples.
  • Long car or plane rides should be avoided because they can cause blood clots in your legs. However, if it’s essential to travel, moving in between is suggested.
What are the Complications of Laminectomy?

Complications and risks are associated with all kinds of surgery. When a patient undergoes a laminectomy, the possible complications may include:

  • Infection in the wound or open cavity of the body
  • Bleeding
  • Formation of blood clots in the lungs or legs
  • Injury of the spinal cord or nerve root injury
  • Issues that may arise from the use of general anesthesia
  • Injury of blood vessels or nerves in the areas of surgery leading to weakness or numbness in the body parts
  • Other risks are specific to patient history, comorbidities, and specific health conditions.
How To Prepare my self for Laminectomy?

Before undergoing a Laminectomy procedure, your doctor will recommend certain do’s and don’ts to ensure the surgery goes well. These include:

  • Intake of certain prescription drugs, vitamins, and supplements
  • They will run a test to confirm if you are pregnant
  • Check your sensitivity and allergies to certain medicines, latex, anesthetics, etc
  • They will ask you to arrange a pickup and drop off after the surgery
  • It is recommended to have someone at home to help you during the recovery period.

You will be asked by your doctor to stop the following before surgery:

  • Taking aspirin or blood thinning medicines
  • Smoking
  • Eating anything after midnight the evening before your surgery
What are the Types Of Laminectomy?

Laminectomy can be of different types. This include:

  1. Cervical laminectomy: A procedure performed on the cervical vertebra in the neck.
  2. Lumbar laminectomy: This type of laminectomy concerns the vertebrae of the lower back. The procedure can relieve pain in the back, legs, and buttocks.
  3. Sacral laminectomy: As the name suggests, this procedure is performed in the case of fused sacral vertebrae, where a lamina is removed to relieve pain.
