The surgical treatment for herniated or degenerative discs in the neck is called anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, or ACDF. To relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves, the surgeon creates an incision in the front (anterior) of the neck, removes the injured disc, and substitutes it with a bone graft. It is done in two steps:
Anterior cervical discectomy: It is performed from the front part of the throat. A disc of vertebrae is removed.
Fusion: This is performed to stabilise and strengthen the throat area. it is performed as soon as the discectomy is done
ACDF is frequently used to treat spinal compression-related neck pain, numbness, and weakness.
- Anaesthesia: To guarantee that the patient is completely unconscious and pain-free, general anaesthesia is given.
- Incision: A little cut is made along a natural crease in the front of the neck.
- Disc Removal: The surgeon carefully pushes aside muscles and tissues to access and remove the injured disc and relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves.
- Fusion: A synthetic spacer or bone graft is placed into the empty disc area to preserve appropriate height and alignment.
- Stabilisation: While the fusion heals, the vertebrae may be held together with screws and a little plate.
- Closure: A sterile dressing is placed over the wound after it has been sutured shut.
- Infection at the surgery site
- Too much bleeding
- Short-term or, in rare cases, long-term hoarseness or trouble swallowing
- Damage to the spinal cord or nerves
- Bone fusion failure (nonunion)
- Hardware-related issues (such as loosened screws)
- Blood clots
- Damage to the trachea, oesophagus, or adjacent blood vessels (rare)
