IVF, or in vitro fertilization, is a sophisticated set of processes that has the potential to result in pregnancy. It is an infertility treatment, a disorder in which most couples are unable to conceive despite at least a year of trying. It is also possible to avoid passing on genetic issues to a child through IVF.

Mature eggs are removed from ovaries and fertilized in a lab by sperm during in vitro fertilization. Subsequently, an embryo is created by implanting one or more of the fertilized eggs into the uterus, the organ in which babies develop. IVF cycles typically last two to three weeks. When these processes are divided into separate steps, the process can occasionally take longer.

Factors affecting the cost of IVF (In Vitro Fertilization):

  • Egg/sperm donation: There will be extra expenses if your IVF cycle involves the use of donor eggs or sperm. Donor sperm and eggs are often far less expensive to utilize because you are covering the specific expenditures associated with the donation rather than the cost of the eggs or sperm. The fact that you won't have to go through the egg retrieval procedure yourself might help to somewhat offset the cost.
  • Embryo donation: The cost of transferring a donated embryo can be cheaper than that of an entire IVF cycle, but you will still be responsible for all related expenses if the thawing process fails and the embryos cannot be transferred.
  • Surrogate: The overall cost of your cycle can be significantly impacted by the use of a surrogate. Generally speaking, you will be liable for your surrogate's living expenses in certain situations as well as all reasonable medical charges.
  • Assisted Hatching: This process is occasionally utilized to help patients with bad prognoses during implantation. An embryo is confined in its early stages of development by a membrane called the zona pellucida. The embryo must first penetrate this protein layer to implant properly in the uterine lining. By using micromanipulation techniques under a microscope, an embryologist can produce a tiny hole in the zona pellucida during assisted hatching, which may encourage implantation. There is an additional fee for this extremely specialized service.
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI): ICSI can assist in treating male-factor infertility, such as low sperm motility, count, or quality. To aid in fertilization, a single sperm is inserted straight into an immature egg during this process. There are extra expenses because this is a distinct lab procedure.
  • The success rate of clinics: Every cycle matters for a multitude of reasons. A critical consideration when assessing the cost of IVF treatment is the number of cycles required to produce a viable result. The total cost of IVF for your family may be significantly impacted by the clinic's success rate, particularly by the proportion of transfers that result in a live delivery.
  • Non-medical costs: The added expense of taking time from work for appointments and procedures must be taken into account. Consider costs like transportation and lodging if your preferred clinic is located outside of town.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a complex series of procedures that can help with fertility or prevent genetic problems and assist with the conception of a child In female infertility, IVF is the best way to cure it and is defined as the inability to become pregnant after at least one year of unprotected intercourse. It also can be used to avoid passing a genetic problem to a child.

During in vitro fertilization, mature eggs are retrieved from ovaries and combined with sperm in a lab. Another process takes place to put one or more of these fertilized eggs (“embryos”) inside a uterus, where a baby will mature and grow. An entire IVF cycle generally takes between 2-3 weeks. Often the steps are broken into separate pieces and the process is drawn out.

It is the most successful kind of in vitro fertilization that works with eggs, embryos, and sperm. This collection of medical procedures is referred to as assisted reproductive technology(ART)

Which diseases could benefit from IVF assistance?

  • Blocked Fallopian tubes
  • Endometriosis
  • The advanced age of a woman
  • Decreased sperm count
  • Failure of the treatment with fertility drugs

Types of IVF treatment

The various IVF treatments that are accessible are:

Natural cycle IVF procedure: In this treatment, fertility drugs are not administered. After the egg is released during the regular monthly cycle, it is gathered and fertilized.

Mild stimulation IVF procedure: After administering the lower dosage fertility medications, the eggs are retrieved and fertilized.

In vitro maturation (IVM): The immature ovaries are collected and then allowed to mature in the laboratory.

Embryo transfer: After fertilization, the embryos are removed and placed within the mother's womb.

Blastocyst transfer: The embryos are cultured in the laboratory until the blastocyst stage and then transferred to the mother’s womb.

Process Involved for IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)

  • Sperm Collection & Fertilization: Fresh or frozen sperm is collected, then fertilisation is done through IVF or ICSI in the laboratory.
  • Embryo Culture & Transfer: The embryos that have been fertilised are kept for 3-5 days; the embryo with the best results is immediately transferred, while the extras are possibly frozen.
  • After Transfer & Pregnancy Test: Progesterone is given as support, and after 10-14 days, a pregnancy test (Beta-hCG) is performed.

It is suggested for individuals or couples with specific indications to undergo IVF:

  • Female Eligibility:
    • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes.
    • Endometriosis or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
    • Low ovarian reserve or poor egg quality.
