The “Whipple procedure”, also called a “Pancreaticoduodenectomy”, is a surgical operation that is used to treat tumors and other disorders affecting the pancreas, small intestine, and bile ducts. This surgery involves the removal of the pancreatic head, the first part of the small intestine, the gallbladder, and the bile duct.

It is commonly employed to treat pancreatic cancer that has not spread beyond the pancreas. Although the Whipple procedure is complex and carries significant risks, it often saves lives by effectively addressing the disease.

Incision & Exploration: In order to access and examine organs, an operation cut is made in the abdomen.
Removal of Organs: The duodenum, gallbladder, bile duct, head of the pancreas, and sometimes part of the stomach are excised.
Reconstruction: The small intestine is attached to the stomach (if it is saved), bile duct, and remaining pancreas.
Closure: The incision is closed and surgical drains are inserted.

It takes about five to eight hours to perform the intricate surgery called the Whipple procedure.

It is very hard to find out about pancreatic cancer early because of this. But a Whipple procedure offers you hope for long life if you detect the cancer early enough before it becomes widespread.

Recovery from the Whipple procedure will be slow since it's a major surgery. Most patients have to stay in the hospital for five or seven days. However, provided everything goes smoothly, you should be able to return to your normal activities in four to six weeks.

In the last several decades, the survival rate of the Whipple treatment has increased considerably and between 5% and 15% of patients undergoing the Whipple procedure died from complications thirty years ago. Today, the mortality rate is between 1% and 3%.
