Endoscopy (UGI Endoscopy) Cost in United Arab Emirates

The minimum cost for Endoscopy (UGI Endoscopy) in the United Arab Emirates starts from AED 4,477 (USD 1,220)

A process used to visually inspect your upper digestive tract is known as an upper endoscopy, sometimes known as an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. A tiny camera at the end of a long, flexible tube helps with this. An endoscopy is used by a gastroenterologist, a specialist in digestive system illnesses, to diagnose and occasionally treat conditions affecting the upper portion of the digestive system.

When diagnosing and occasionally treating disorders affecting the upper portion of the digestive system, an upper endoscopy is performed. The stomach, esophagus, and duodenum, the first segment of the small intestine, are all parts of the upper digestive system.

An endoscopic procedure could be suggested for:

  • The signs and symptoms, including heartburn, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, difficulty swallowing, and gastrointestinal bleeding, can be identified with the help of an endoscopy.
  • Diagnosis- During an endoscopy, tissue samples (biopsies) might be taken to check for illnesses that could be causing diarrhea, bleeding, anemia, or inflammation. Additionally, it can identify certain upper gastrointestinal malignancies.
  • Treat- Digestive system issues can be treated with specialized instruments that are passed through the endoscope. An endoscopy can be used, for instance, to remove a foreign item, enlarge a narrow esophagus, snip off a polyp, or burn a bleeding vessel to stop the bleeding.

About the Endoscopy (UGI Endoscopy)

An upper GI endoscopy, or esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a procedure used to diagnose and treat issues in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The upper GI tract includes the esophagus (food pipe), stomach, and the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine).

During this procedure, a long, flexible tube called an endoscope is used. The endoscope is equipped with a small light source and a video camera at one end. It is inserted through your mouth and throat, then gently advanced through the esophagus and stomach, and into the duodenum. The video images captured by the camera are displayed on a monitor, allowing the doctor to examine these areas closely.

Classification of Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) Endoscopy

Based on Purpose

  • Diagnostic Endoscopy
  • Therapeutic Endoscopy

Based on Technique it includes;

  • Standard Endoscopy
  • Advanced Endoscopy
  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
  • Capsule Endoscopy
  • Enteroscopy

How is Endoscopy (UGI Endoscopy) performed?

Firstly, the patient will be instructed to remove any clothing, jewelry, or other items that may hinder the procedure. If the patient wears dentures, they will need to be removed until the test is completed. Additionally, a gown will be provided for the patient to wear during the procedure.

An intravenous (IV) line will be inserted into your arm or hand. A sedative will be injected into the IV to help you relax. The patient's heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen levels will be monitored throughout the procedure.

Later, the patient will lie on their left side on the X-ray table with their head bent forward. A numbing medicine may be sprayed into the back of the throat to prevent gagging as the tube is passed down. The spray might have a bitter taste, which can be reduced by holding your breath during the application.

Because the tube will be in the patient's throat, if patient will not be able to swallow saliva during the procedure, Then saliva will be suctioned from your mouth periodically.

A mouth guard will be placed in the mouth to prevent you from biting down on the tube and to protect the teeth.

Once the throat is numbed and the sedative has taken effect, the provider will insert the endoscope into the mouth and throat, guiding it down the esophagus, through the patient's stomach, and into the duodenum. the patient may feel some pressure or swelling as the tube moves along.

If necessary, samples of fluid or tissue can be taken at any point during the test. Other procedures, such as removing a blockage, may also be performed while the tube is in place. After all the examinations and any necessary procedures are completed, the tube will be removed.

Recovery from Endoscopy (UGI Endoscopy)

After the procedure, the patient will be taken to the recovery room to be watched. Once their blood pressure, pulse, and breathing are stable and they are awake and alert, the Patient will be taken to their hospital room. Alternatively, you may be discharged to your home following the procedure. If you are going home, it is important to arrange for someone to drive you.

The patient will not be allowed to eat or drink anything until the gag reflex returns, This is to prevent choking. It is common to experience a sore throat and discomfort when swallowing for a few days after the procedure, which is considered normal. Some patients may also feel gassy following the procedure. Unless otherwise instructed, patients can typically resume their normal diet and activities after the procedure.

Q. What can I expect during and after a UGI endoscopy procedure?

A. During:

  • Through the images the endoscope transmits, your healthcare practitioner will closely inspect the lining of your stomach, duodenum, and esophagus during the procedure.
  • Biopsy or Intervention-Biopsies, or tiny tissue samples, could be obtained if necessary for additional testing at a lab. This is a routine treatment with no pain involved.
  • Therapeutic procedures like dilation of constricted areas (strictures) or halting ulcer bleeding can also be carried out during a UGI endoscopy.

After:

  • The air trapped during the treatment may cause temporary fullness, bloating, or discomfort in your throat. Usually, these effects disappear quickly.
  • After a UGI endoscopy, it's typical to experience a sore throat for a day or two.
  • You should not drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day if sedation was administered, so you will need a ride home.

A candidate for esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), also known as upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopy, is usually a person with illnesses or symptoms that require additional upper digestive tract research. The following are typical signs and circumstances in which a UGI endoscopy may be advised:

  • Challenges or difficulty swallowing food or liquids is a persistent problem.
  • Despite receiving medical attention, acid reflux or heartburn are persistent symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
  • Upper abdominal pain that is ongoing or recurrent and cannot be attributed to any other illnesses or testing.
  • Significant weight reduction that doesn't seem to be related to dieting or deliberate exercise adjustments.
  • Persistent Indigestion: After eating, persistent discomfort or bloating that is not eased by over-the-counter drugs.
  • Examining for suspected or confirmed upper gastrointestinal cancers, such as stomach, duodenal, or esophageal cancer, is known as cancer screening.
  • Barrett's Esophagus: Keeping an eye on people with persistent GERD who may develop Barrett's esophagus, a disorder that is precancerous in the esophagus.
  • Diagnosis and surveillance of ulcers in the duodenum (the first portion of the small intestine) or stomach.
  • Hiatal Hernia: Evaluation of a hernia in which a portion of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm and into the chest cavity.
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Monitoring patients with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis for consequences such as strictures or inflammation affecting the upper gastrointestinal system.
  • Celiac Disease: Verification of the diagnosis and evaluation of the extent of gluten intolerance-related intestinal damage.
  • Esophageal Varices: Identifying swollen veins in the esophagus that may bleed and are frequently linked to liver illness.
