A vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure in which a vagina is created. This involves the removal of the penis, the testicles, and the scrotum if orchiectomy was not performed previously. A vaginoplasty generally involves rearranging the existing tissue in the genital region to create the artificial vaginal canal and the external genitalia called the labia. The surgeon uses the skin surrounding the penis in addition to the scrotal skin in order to create the vaginal canal. In some cases, an additional skin graft from the abdomen is needed to get a full vaginal canal. During recovery, you must not insert anything into the vaginal canal and should avoid sexual intercourse for about 6 weeks. Don’t submerge the vagina and you should avoid swimming, baths, and hot tubs. Tough exercise and activities like cycling, horseback riding, and motorcycle riding must be avoided during the recovery.
