“Penile implants” are a kind of devices that are that are implanted into the penis to help them get an erection, when other erectile dysfunction (ED) therapies fail. This procedure to place the implants involves surgery. Before opting for penile implants, it's crucial to fully understand the surgical process, potential risks, complications, and necessary post-operative care.

Patients can also avoid this treatment method when ;

  • Erectile Dysfunction that is suffering from is caused by an emergent situation and can be reversed
  • they have a urinary tract or pulmonary infection
  • they have Uncontrollable diabetes

Sometimes Infections following penile implant surgery occur within the initial three months after the procedure. If an infection occurs, surgical removal of the implant is often required for treatment.

Types

Generally, there are two main types of Implants;

  • Semi-rigid Implants
  • Inflatable Implants

Semi-Rigid Rods: These are rigid and can only be shifted in the direction of the body when necessary. In addition, a positionable penile implant, like other semi-rigid rods, has springs near the ends with a center segment series that enhances down and upward mobility.

Inflatable implants: As the name implies, inflatable implants are deflated while not in use and inflated when an erection occurs. Three-piece inflatable implants and the Two-piece model work in a similar way, with a small variation.

Penile implants are used to treat erectile dysfunction when other treatments, like medication or vacuum devices, are ineffective or not suitable. In extreme cases of Peyronie's disease, which results in painful, curved erections, they can also be helpful. Men with severe heart issues, poorly managed diabetes, or uncontrolled infections are not advised to use them, though. Implants restore the capacity to get an erection, but they don't increase penile size, feeling, or desire.

One should see a doctor, preferably a urologist, if one experiences ongoing erectile dysfunction that affects one's sexual life, especially after trying medications or other non-surgical treatments without success. If choices don't work or aren't right, one might want to think about getting a penile implant. Additionally, in case you suffer from severe bleeding, fever, or infection symptoms following implant surgery, get medical help right away.

Your doctor will examine your medical history, including past surgeries, drugs, and experiences with erectile dysfunction (ED), during the initial examination for a penile implant. In addition to confirming ED, a physical and urologic examination will determine whether alternative treatments are feasible. The physician will assess hand function for implant use and look for possible surgical hazards. Expectations, implant types, and the fact that the treatment is irreversible will also be covered.

  • Catheter Use: During surgery, a catheter may be placed to collect urine.
  • Incision: Made in the lower abdomen, at the base, or beneath the penis head.
  • Tissue Preparation: The corpora cavernosa, or erectile tissue, is stretched to accommodate the implant.
  • Implant placement: It involves inserting specially made cylinders into the penis.
  • Device Components:
    • A pump and valve are inserted into the scrotum as part of a two-piece implant.
    • An extra fluid reservoir is positioned in or above the abdominal wall in a three-piece implant.
  • Closure: Stitches are used to seal incisions.

The average penis implant procedure takes one to two hours to finish.

Following the surgery, scar tissue formation, infection, urethral injury, and bleeding are all potential side effects. The implant may result in mechanical failure, component displacement, or skin erosion. It may be necessary to remove implants if certain patients experience a shorter penis or decreased blood supply to the head.

Firm, manageable erections are possible with a penile implant without compromising ejaculation, orgasm, or pleasure. There is a minimal chance of problems with this outpatient surgery. Over 90% of users are satisfied with implants with a 20-year lifespan. Additionally, the process can increase self-esteem.

After penile implant surgery, pain is managed with medication and may last a few weeks. The purpose of antibiotics is to stop infections. In four to six weeks, most men return to their regular sexual activities. You will learn how to use the implant and possibly practice inflating it to promote healing around three to six weeks after surgery.

The success rate of penile implants is remarkable; more than 90% of patients and partners express happiness. After five years, the survival rate for inflatable penile prostheses is 96%. Mechanical problems are rare and usually resolved with revision surgery.
