Dialysis via peritoneal injection is a method of eliminating waste from blood. It is a treatment for renal failure, a condition in which the kidneys are no longer able to adequately filter blood. A cleansing solution is injected via a catheter into the abdomen, or portion of the stomach, during peritoneal dialysis. The peritoneum, the inner lining of the abdomen, filters and eliminates waste from blood. The fluid containing the filtered waste exits the abdomen and is discarded after a predetermined period.
Peritoneal dialysis differs from hemodialysis, a more popular blood cleansing therapy, in that it takes place inside the body. During that process, a machine filters blood outside of the body. Treatments for peritoneal dialysis can be completed while traveling, at work, or home. However, it's not a kidney failure treatment for everyone.
