Dialysis via peritoneal injection is a method of eliminating waste from blood. It is a treatment for renal failure, a condition in which the kidneys are no longer able to adequately filter blood. A cleansing solution is injected via a catheter into the abdomen, or portion of the stomach, during peritoneal dialysis. The peritoneum, the inner lining of the abdomen, filters and eliminates waste from blood. The fluid containing the filtered waste exits the abdomen and is discarded after a predetermined period.

Peritoneal dialysis differs from hemodialysis, a more popular blood cleansing therapy, in that it takes place inside the body. During that process, a machine filters blood outside of the body. Treatments for peritoneal dialysis can be completed while traveling, at work, or home. However, it's not a kidney failure treatment for everyone.

Factors affecting the cost of the Peritoneal Dialysis

  • Healthcare facility: Costs may vary depending on the location and kind of medical facility where stereotactic radiation is delivered. There may be differences in the cost structures of outpatient clinics, private hospitals, and academic medical facilities.
  • Facility Charges: Fees related to using the treatment facility, such as maintenance costs, administrative fees, and overhead.
  • Medical staff: Costs may be impacted by the knowledge of the medical and technical personnel providing the treatment.
  • Planning for Treatment: Costs may vary depending on the intricacy and duration of treatment planning, which may involve the use of sophisticated imaging techniques and computer-aided planning systems.
  • Equipment and Technology: Costs may vary depending on the kind and level of sophistication of the equipment utilized. Modern and cutting-edge technologies could increase costs.
  • Patient Supervision and Assistance: The provision of support services and ongoing patient monitoring during therapy may raise the overall cost.
  • Number of sessions required: Comparing Fewer or more sessions may be required for delivery. Nevertheless, the total cost can still be affected by the number of sessions needed.
  • Imaging Diagnostics: For exact treatment planning, high-quality imaging studies—such as CT or MRI scans—may be required. These diagnostic tests can increase the overall cost.
  • Post-Medication Monitoring: The expenses incurred for imaging investigations, follow-up appointments, and evaluations to track the patient's response to treatment and any possible adverse effects.

When the kidneys are unable to adequately filter waste materials and extra fluid from the circulation owing to renal failure, peritoneal dialysis is used. It uses the lining of your abdomen (the peritoneum) and a cleansing solution to filter blood inside your body.

You should consult a physician If you have signs of kidney failure, such as fatigue, ankle or leg edema, changes in urination, nausea, or shortness of breath. If you are currently receiving peritoneal dialysis, get in touch with your physician if you experience any of the following symptoms: chronic discomfort, issues with fluid drainage, or infection (fever, abdominal pain, or hazy dialysis fluid).

Your doctor will arrange for a little abdominal surgery to insert a catheter to prepare you for peritoneal dialysis. You may need to stop certain medications, and you'll receive training on performing dialysis at home, maintaining hygiene, and monitoring for infection.

With peritoneal dialysis, a catheter is used to fill your abdominal cavity with dialysate, a cleansing fluid. The fluid draws waste and excess fluids from your blood through the peritoneal membrane, which lines your abdominal organs. A machine repeats the procedure several times a day or overnight, draining the fluid after a particular period of time and replacing it with a new solution.

The average duration of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis is 40 minutes. Three to five sessions a day are required.

  • Infection of the abdominal lining (Peritonitis)
  • redness, pain, or pus around the site of insertion
  • Hernias
  • Poor dialysis clearance
  • Abdominal bloating and fullness

  • Greater flexibility and independence
  • Fewer dietary restrictions compared to hemodialysis
  • Preserves remaining kidney function

To allow for healing, you will need to wait approximately 2 weeks following peritoneal dialysis catheter placement before beginning therapy. Proper care of the catheter site is essential to prevent infection. Additionally, you'll get instructions on how to safely administer dialysis at home.

The success rate of peritoneal dialysis is excellent when patients are well-trained and adhere to treatment protocols.

Process Involved for Peritoneal Dialysis

  • Pre-Treatment Stage: The patient receives an initial evaluation that includes blood testing, imaging, and the implantation of a catheter in the peritoneal cavity for dialysis access.
  • Dialysis Stage: In peritoneal dialysis, a sterile solution is injected into the abdomen to collect waste and excess fluid, then drained and replaced multiple times daily or overnight.
  • Immediate Post-Treatment Recovery: Patients may suffer moderate discomfort or bloating, which usually passes quickly following dialysis.
  • Follow-up Care: Regular monitoring of kidney function, blood tests, and evaluation of the dialysis catheter site are essential. The patient's ability to complete the dialysis process efficiently at home is also periodically assessed.
  • End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD)
  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
  • Acute Kidney Failure (in some cases)
  • Fluid overload and electrolyte imbalances
  • Toxic kidney injuries requiring dialysis support
  • Individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) who need dialysis yet prefer a home-based treatment option.
  • Patients who are unable to tolerate hemodialysis or choose a less intrusive form of renal function maintenance.
  • Catheter Insertion
  • Vascular Access Procedures
  • Kidney Transplant
  • Peritoneal dialysis can be performed at home, allowing for greater flexibility.
  • It allows for fewer food limitations and greater fluid consumption flexibility.
