How Much Does ORIF Cost in Vietnam?

The cost of ORIF Surgery in Vietnam typically ranges between USD 3000 - USD 8000. However, the final price can vary depending on several factors, such as the type and severity of the fracture, the bone involved, the type of implants required (plates, screws, rods), the hospital location, the surgeon's expertise, and the patient’s overall health.

Additional factors, such as the length of hospital stay, diagnostic imaging, post-surgical physiotherapy, and the use of high-grade implants, can further influence the total cost.

Factors Influencing the Cost of ORIF

  • Type and Severity of Fracture: Simple fractures cost less to treat, while complex or multiple fractures, open fractures, or fractures involving joints can significantly increase cost due to longer surgery time and the need for more advanced implants.
  • Hospital and Location: Hospitals in major cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City typically charge more because of advanced facilities and higher operating costs. Private international hospitals usually cost more compared to government hospitals.
  • Surgeon’s Expertise: Orthopaedic trauma surgeons with extensive experience or international training may charge higher professional fees. Their expertise often results in better alignment, lower complication rates, and faster recovery.
  • Pre-Treatment Diagnostic Tests: Diagnostic tests such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI, and blood tests add to the total cost. These tests help determine fracture patterns and plan the surgical approach accurately.
  • Post-Surgical Care: Post-operative care includes physiotherapy, pain medications, wound care, and follow-up consultations. Since ORIF often requires structured rehab for proper recovery, these costs can add up based on the number of sessions needed.
  • Length of Hospital Stay: Unlike minimally invasive procedures, ORIF usually requires 2–5 days of hospital stay, depending on the complexity of the fracture. Longer stays and higher-level rooms increase the overall treatment cost.

Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is a surgical procedure to stabilize and heal broken bones. This procedure may be necessary to treat a fractured ankle.

The ankle joint is composed of three bones: the tibia (shinbone), the fibula (the smaller bone in the leg), and the talus (a bone in the foot). Various injuries can affect the lower tibia, lower fibula, or talus. You may have a fracture in just one of these bones, or you could have fractures in two or more of them. In some fractures, the bone breaks but the fragments remain properly aligned. In other fractures, the injury causes the bone fragments to shift out of alignment.

Types:

There are two types of ORIF Surgery:

  • Internal Fixation
  • External Fixation

Internal fixation is a surgical method used to reconnect bones, typically involving the use of specialized screws, plates, rods, wires, or nails. The surgeon places These devices inside the bones to ensure they heal correctly and prevent abnormal healing. The procedure is generally performed under general anesthesia.

External fixation involves stabilizing a fracture by inserting pins, screws, and wires into the bone on both sides of the break. These pins are then connected outside the skin using a series of clamps and rods, forming an external frame to hold the bones in place

Who needs ORIF?

ORIF surgery is used to stabilize the broken bones in which could be in any sections of the body. The following are some of the common conditions that are treated with the help of an ORIF surgery:

The bone parts such as the knee, hip, tibia-fibula, humerus, and femur are substantially out of alignment

The bone pieces are piercing out through the skin

The part of the bones in the above-mentioned regions of the body is fractured, resulting in the development of multiple pieces.

The fracture involves a knee joint.

Even after receiving conservative treatment, bone repair does not occur normally.

Open reduction refers to open surgery that aimed to set the bones as may be necessary following a fracture, whereas internal fixation means fixing of plates or screws and intramedullary bone nails in the case of humerus, tibia, or femur bones to facilitate the overall healing process.

Rigid fixation inhibits micromotion between the fracture lines, which not only promotes healing but also avoids additional infection, which can occur when plates such as dynamic compression plates are utilized as implants.

Frequently Asked Questions

ORIF is used to treat a wide range of fractures, including:
  • Complex or displaced fractures
  • Open fractures
  • Fractures involving joints
  • Multiple fractures
  • Wrist, ankle, femur, tibia, pelvis, shoulder, or elbow fractures
  • The surgeon makes an incision over the fractured bone, realigns the broken pieces (open reduction), and stabilises them with plates, screws, rods, or pins (internal fixation). This ensures proper healing and maintains the correct bone structure.

As with any surgery, ORIF may involve risks such as:
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Implant irritation
  • Nerve or vessel injury
  • Delayed or non-union of the bone
  • These risks are uncommon when performed by experienced orthopaedic surgeons and followed by proper aftercare.

Recovery timelines depend on the type of fracture and bone involved:
  • Basic mobility: 1–3 weeks
  • Return to routine activities: 6–12 weeks
  • Full recovery: 3–6 months, or longer for major bones like the femur
  • Additional expenses may include:
  • Diagnostic tests (X-ray, CT, MRI)
  • Anaesthesia fees
  • Hospital room charges
  • Medications and surgical supplies
  • Physiotherapy sessions
  • The top cities include:
  • Hanoi
  • Ho Chi Minh City
  • Da Nang
  • Vietnam is increasingly preferred due to:
  • Affordable treatment costs
  • Skilled trauma and orthopaedic surgeons
  • Modern hospitals with advanced imaging and surgical equipment
  • Shorter waiting times
  • High success rates
  • The success rate is high, especially in specialised trauma centres. Most patients experience Proper bone healing, Restoration of mobility, Good alignment and reduced long-term complications. Success depends on the complexity of the fracture, surgical expertise, and compliance with physiotherapy.
