Meniscus Repair Treatment Cost in Malaysia

Meniscal tears are one of the most commonly reported injuries to the knee region. The cartilage is a C-shaped fibrocartilaginous structure within the knee incompletely covering the surface of the shinbone where it articulates with the leg bone. It consists of the central cartilage, on the inner part of the knee, and the lateral cartilage on the outer side of the knee. The tissues act as shock absorbers and protect the outer surface of the knee and also help in the rotation of the knee. They help in stabilizing the knee. The intact menisci move with the stabilizing function of the ligaments and are most effective once when the ligaments are in good condition. The majority of the meniscus has no blood supply and for that reason, once broken, the cartilage is unable to undergo the normal healing method and often needs surgical repair. Also, a meniscus begins to deteriorate with age, usually developing chronic tears. Typically, once the cartilage is broken, the torn pieces begin to float abnormally within the joint. Menisci could tear because of several reasons such as those as mentioned below:

  • Twisting motion of the knee

  • Over flexing of the knee

  • Sudden twisting such as in sports activities

  • Sudden stopping or swift movements

Degenerative changes that occur over time will weaken and thin the tissues, leading to meniscal tears.

Also, the menisci could tear in several ways. Treatment choices can rely upon the kind of tear, the location of the tear, and the extent of the tear.

b. Meniscus Repair in Malaysia

Anyone suffering from pain, joint inflammation, and immobility caused by a torn or lacerate cartilage can undergo cartilage repair procedures in Malaysia. Most tears arise due to sports injuries. The age factor may additionally cause degeneration and wear and tear of the knee. In cases of the old, only a doctor can suggest the best treatment that can give a larger vary of motion, quality, and pain relief. For many people, cold or hot compresses, compression bandages, and therapy could help in the healing of a torn cartilage. However, in some cases, surgery is required to repair broken or torn cartilage, and treatment for meniscal tears depends on the severity of the injury. Surgical repair of the cartilage is commonly done through arthroscopic surgery. In some cases, the torn section of the cartilage could also be removed through arthroscopic surgery. This procedure uses a small camera that is inserted through a little incision within the knee. The camera displays the inside portion of the knee and permits access by tiny instruments which are used by doctors to get rid of or fix the torn tissues, in a minimally invasive surgical technique. In some cases, a torn cartilage will be repaired using sutures or absorbable plastic staples. A meniscal transplant may additionally be performed In cases where the cartilage can't be repaired. Complete removal and replacement could also be done. In such things, a meniscal transplant is performed, especially for people who are physically active.

About the Meniscus Repair

The meniscus is a rubbery ligament between the shinbone and the thighbone. Meniscus tear takes place when there is a solid contorting movement of the knee, especially when the knee is bent while the foot is firmly placed on the ground. It is one of the most common knee injuries among sportsperson who play football, cricket, and tennis, and people who perform high-impact activities.

A few people may suffer from meniscus tear due to ligament of knee degeneration that takes place with age due to several factors.

Pain, swelling and tightness may increase over several days if you have a meniscus tear. You may not be able to straighten your knee, and it may lock in position. It may be problematic for you to put weight on your leg or even walk normally like before.

Minor meniscus tears can heal by itself if there is a good blood supply to the area. However, some tears require arthroscopic surgery to fix the tear. It is important to rest and let the ligament heal. Ice packs and physical therapy helps with the recovery of a meniscus tear.

Different Approaches to Meniscus Repair Surgery

Only 10 percent of meniscus tears can heal by itself if there is an appropriate blood supply.

Most of the surgeries are arthroscopic surgeries in which a special device is used to view inside the knee and see the torn meniscus. There are different procedures, however, that can be conducted to repair or fix the meniscus and these include the following:

  • Meniscectomy: It can be partial meniscectomy or complete, that is, the torn meniscus can be partially removed or completely. It can be done as an open surgery or arthroscopic surgery.
  • Meniscal Repair: It can be performed open or arthroscopically and the preservation of the meniscus involved three aspects:
    • Repair of the torn meniscus
    • Non-surgical treatment of asymptomatic meniscal pathologies
    • Partial meniscectomy and resection

  • Meniscal Regeneration: Meniscal transplantation (MAT) can be performed to restore the meniscus. In this case, a graft is usually taken from the hamstring muscle to reproduce the meniscus.

How is Meniscus Repair performed?

The steps in the procedure vary depending on whether the surgeon has advised arthroscopic removal or resection of meniscus or repair using a graft.

Arthroscopic surgery is a keyhole or minimally invasive surgery that involves 2 to 3 small incisions near the knee. An instrument called an arthroscope, which has a camera attached to its tip is inserted through one of the incisions to view the knee ligaments from the inside.

From another incision, the surgeon inserts the instruments used to resect to remove the damaged meniscus.

In many cases, meniscus reconstruction using a synthetic graft or a graft taken from the muscle of the patient is done. The graft is attached to the meniscus after removing the damaged part. This procedure is also performed arthroscopically nowadays.

Depending on the extent of the injury and whether other ligaments are also ruptured, the surgeon may decide to conduct the surgery traditionally rather than arthroscopically.

Recovery from Meniscus Repair

You can expect to wear a brace or cast to keep your knee stable. You will probably have to use crutches for at least a few weeks to keep weight off your knee.

The total duration of hospital stay is about 2 days. After that, you will have to attend physiotherapy sessions to maintain the movement and stability of the knee. The stitches removal takes place after 7 to 10 days of the procedure when the surgical site has healed.

The physiotherapy has to be continued until you return to the normal routine and activities. Usually, the patient is made to walk the very next day of the procedure with the help of support.

Local anesthetics are injected into the wound and knee joint at the time of surgery. This will wear off within 8 to 12 hours and it is not uncommon for patients to encounter more pain on the first or second day after surgery when swelling peaks.

Most patients will require some narcotic pain medication for a short time – this can be taken as per directions on the bottle.
