.The meniscus is a structure in the knee joint, that is located between the femur (also known as the thigh bone) and the tibia (the shin bone). It is a semi-lunar or “C“ shaped joint that consists of cartilaginous and white fibrous tissues. The knee joint has two menisci: medial or central and lateral or one on the side, separately for each knee. They function as shock absorbers and buffer the energy of movements which may damage articular structures. The main indication for meniscus repair surgery is the tearing of the meniscus. It is an exceedingly common knee injury. Usually, the meniscus is torn due to trauma. Especially for older people, the reason can also be degenerative processes. However, during certain cases, meniscus repair surgery is contraindicated. Meniscus repair surgery is usually done to treat damaged cartilage when conventional methods fail to alleviate the symptoms. Symptoms that are associated most commonly with the meniscus tear are:
Severe pain in the knee area
Stiffness and swelling of the knee joint
Locking of knee
The sensation of the knee “giving way”
The treatment must be administered, once the torn meniscus is diagnosed. Rest, cold therapy, compression, and elevation of the injured leg are the initial treatments for the torn meniscus. If the injury is mild, the conservative therapy helps enough and therefore the meniscus recovers on its own. However, if the knee remains painful and therefore the motion of it is still limited, surgery is suggested. The surgery is often focused on the reconstruction or on the removal of the damaged meniscus that is meniscus repair surgery and meniscectomy. Saving the meniscus is extremely important because it decreases the danger of secondary osteoarthritis, especially in young patients. However, several factors determine what type of operation will be performed. The location of the tear of the meniscus is the first crucial factor. The ideal location of the tear to settle on the meniscus repair surgery is at the periphery of the meniscus. Further, the opposite criterion is the size of the tear. If it is shorter than 2 cm, surgery to repair it is often performed.
Tunisia has a high standard of healthcare and a great reputation for cosmetic procedures. Cosmetic and plastic surgeons are usually licensed by the Ministry of Health. The hospitals and clinics in Tunisia are well equipped and have staff who can speak English too. Tunisia welcomes an ever-increasing number of medical tourists annually, many of whom travel for meniscus repair in Tunisia. One type of surgery that is used to repair the meniscus is open surgery in which the knee is completely opened so that the surgeon can see the tear and repair it. However, this type of surgery is declining in popularity thanks to the introduction of arthroscopic surgery. This procedure involves making a little incision and inserting a camera into the opening to see the surgical site without creating a bigger opening. Appropriately sized surgical instruments are inserted through the opening and therefore the meniscus is sutured together. Second-generation meniscus repair surgery involves an arthroscopically assisted technique. Since modern medicine is concentrated on minimally invasive methods of treatment, this sort of surgery is usually utilized nowadays. An arthroscope is a small fiber-optic instrument that enables the surgeon to inspect and operate the knee from inside without having to open the overlying structures. The first step in meniscus repair surgery is to clean the pathogenic tissue region. Any torn regions are also repaired. Special equipment is used to perform debridement for a meniscus repair in Tunisia. Once this is done, a fixation is initiated. In meniscus repair surgery nonabsorbable or slowly absorbable sutures are used. Depending on the technique of suturing and suture tying, arthroscopically assisted meniscus repair surgery is named ‘inside-out‘ or ‘outside-in. The most progressive technique is third-generation meniscus repair. Specific bioabsorbable devices are specially designed to retrieve the integrity of the torn meniscus. Sutures or accessory skin incisions are not needed in this technique. That is why this type of meniscus repair is also known as ‘all-inside surgery.’ The ultimate decision of the sort of operation is formed at the time of arthroscopy when the surgeon inspects the knee and evaluates the damage. Regardless of the type of technique, the surgery is carried out under regional (spinal or epidural) or general anesthesia.
Since Tunisia has high standards of health care the cost of meniscus repair surgery in Tunisia is around 1800 USD. The cost of the surgery is based upon the materials and methods used, the timing of the surgery, whether the patent is young or old, the type of tear, chronicity, location of the clinic in Tunisia, the experience of the surgeon, and the cost of anesthesia.

The meniscus is a rubbery ligament between the shinbone and the thighbone. Meniscus tear takes place when there is a solid contorting movement of the knee, especially when the knee is bent while the foot is firmly placed on the ground. It is one of the most common knee injuries among sportsperson who play football, cricket, and tennis, and people who perform high-impact activities.
A few people may suffer from meniscus tear due to ligament of knee degeneration that takes place with age due to several factors.
Pain, swelling and tightness may increase over several days if you have a meniscus tear. You may not be able to straighten your knee, and it may lock in position. It may be problematic for you to put weight on your leg or even walk normally like before.
Minor meniscus tears can heal by itself if there is a good blood supply to the area. However, some tears require arthroscopic surgery to fix the tear. It is important to rest and let the ligament heal. Ice packs and physical therapy helps with the recovery of a meniscus tear.
Only 10 percent of meniscus tears can heal by itself if there is an appropriate blood supply.
Most of the surgeries are arthroscopic surgeries in which a special device is used to view inside the knee and see the torn meniscus. There are different procedures, however, that can be conducted to repair or fix the meniscus and these include the following:
The steps in the procedure vary depending on whether the surgeon has advised arthroscopic removal or resection of meniscus or repair using a graft.
Arthroscopic surgery is a keyhole or minimally invasive surgery that involves 2 to 3 small incisions near the knee. An instrument called an arthroscope, which has a camera attached to its tip is inserted through one of the incisions to view the knee ligaments from the inside.
From another incision, the surgeon inserts the instruments used to resect to remove the damaged meniscus.
In many cases, meniscus reconstruction using a synthetic graft or a graft taken from the muscle of the patient is done. The graft is attached to the meniscus after removing the damaged part. This procedure is also performed arthroscopically nowadays.
Depending on the extent of the injury and whether other ligaments are also ruptured, the surgeon may decide to conduct the surgery traditionally rather than arthroscopically.
You can expect to wear a brace or cast to keep your knee stable. You will probably have to use crutches for at least a few weeks to keep weight off your knee.
The total duration of hospital stay is about 2 days. After that, you will have to attend physiotherapy sessions to maintain the movement and stability of the knee. The stitches removal takes place after 7 to 10 days of the procedure when the surgical site has healed.
The physiotherapy has to be continued until you return to the normal routine and activities. Usually, the patient is made to walk the very next day of the procedure with the help of support.
Local anesthetics are injected into the wound and knee joint at the time of surgery. This will wear off within 8 to 12 hours and it is not uncommon for patients to encounter more pain on the first or second day after surgery when swelling peaks.
Most patients will require some narcotic pain medication for a short time – this can be taken as per directions on the bottle.
