How Much Does Kidney Cancer Treatment Cost in Jordan?

The cost of Kidney Cancer Treatment in Jordan typically ranges between USD 10000 - USD 25000, depending on factors such as the stage of cancer, type of treatment required (surgery, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, or radiation), hospital standards, and the oncologist’s expertise.

Additional expenses, such as diagnostic imaging, pathology tests, hospital stays, medications, and follow-up consultations, may also affect the total treatment cost.

Factors Influencing the Cost of Kidney Cancer Treatment

  • Type and Stage of Cancer: Early-stage cancers that can be managed with surgery alone cost less compared to advanced stages requiring combination therapies such as targeted drugs or immunotherapy.
  • Type of Treatment: Surgical procedures like partial or radical nephrectomy (laparoscopic or robotic-assisted) have varying costs. Targeted therapy, radiation therapy, or immunotherapy adds to the total expense depending on the treatment duration and drug type.
  • Hospital and Facilities: Internationally accredited hospitals in Amman offering advanced oncology and robotic surgery facilities may charge higher fees.
  • Oncologist and Surgeon Expertise: Renowned oncologists and urologic surgeons with experience in renal malignancies may have higher professional charges.
  • Duration of Treatment: Advanced stages of kidney cancer that require prolonged treatment cycles, follow-ups, and imaging contribute to higher costs.
  • Post-Treatment Care: Costs for medications, rehabilitation, and regular monitoring after treatment are also significant factors.

Kidney cancer, also called “renal cancer”, is a condition where the cells in the kidneys grow out of control. So, forms a small mass also called a renal cortical tumor. This tumor could be malignant or benign. A malignant tumor is cancerous and may spread to other parts of the body. A benign tumor is also cancerous but it does not spread to other parts of the body. A benign tumor can grow but won’t spread.

The exact reasons behind most kidney cancers are not completely understood. Doctors believe kidney cancer starts when certain cells in the kidney change their DNA, like a set of instructions inside the cell(mutation). These changes signal the cells to grow and multiply quickly. As these abnormal cells gather, they create a lump called a tumor, which might go beyond the kidney. In some cases, these cells can break away and travel to other parts of the body, a process known as metastasis.

Once you are diagnosed with kidney cancer and know the stage of cancer, your doctor and you can plan your treatment. Your doctor may refer you to a specialist such as a urologist, a radiation oncologist, or a surgeon for treatment. There are many types of kidney cancer treatment. However, in most cases, surgery is the first step. Sometimes, even if the surgery removes the entire tumor, your doctor may recommend additional treatments, to kill the remaining cancer cells, if any. Here below are a few types of treatment for kidney cancer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kidney Cancer Treatment involves various medical and surgical approaches to remove or destroy cancerous tissue in the kidneys. Treatment may include surgery, targeted drug therapy, immunotherapy, or radiation, depending on the cancer’s stage and spread.

Treatment is recommended when diagnostic tests confirm kidney malignancy. It is necessary for patients with:
  • Localised or advanced kidney tumours
  • Symptoms such as blood in urine, flank pain, or unexplained weight loss
  • Recurrent or metastatic kidney cancer
  • Failure of non-surgical management options
  • Treatment depends on the cancer stage, patient health, and the doctor’s recommendation:
  • Surgical Options:
  • Partial Nephrectomy: Removes only the tumour and a small margin of healthy tissue, preserving kidney function.Radical Nephrectomy: Removes the entire kidney, nearby lymph nodes, and surrounding tissue if required.Laparoscopic or Robotic Surgery: Minimally invasive options offering faster recovery.
  • Targeted Therapy: Uses drugs that specifically attack cancer cells without harming normal cells, effective in advanced stages.
  • Immunotherapy: Boosts the immune system to help the body fight cancer more effectively.
  • Radiation Therapy: Used in cases where surgery is not possible or to relieve pain in metastatic cancer.
  • Chemotherapy: Rarely used but may be considered for certain aggressive or recurrent cases.
  • The treatment duration varies from a few weeks for surgery to several months for systemic therapies.

    Possible risks may include:
  • Infection or bleeding after surgery
  • Fatigue or nausea from radiation or systemic therapy
  • Kidney function decline (especially after nephrectomy)
  • Reaction to medications or immunotherapy
  • Recurrence or metastasis in advanced cases
  • When performed under expert supervision in specialised oncology centres, complications are minimal and outcomes are excellent.

  • Targeted Therapy or Immunotherapy: Ongoing treatment with periodic monitoring.
  • Radiation Therapy: Outpatient sessions over several weeks; mild fatigue may persist temporarily.
