In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a complex series of procedures that can help with fertility or prevent genetic problems and assist with the conception of a child In female infertility, IVF is the best way to cure it and is defined as the inability to become pregnant after at least one year of unprotected intercourse. It also can be used to avoid passing a genetic problem to a child.
During in vitro fertilization, mature eggs are retrieved from ovaries and combined with sperm in a lab. Another process takes place to put one or more of these fertilized eggs (“embryos”) inside a uterus, where a baby will mature and grow. An entire IVF cycle generally takes between 2-3 weeks. Often the steps are broken into separate pieces and the process is drawn out.
It is the most successful kind of in vitro fertilization that works with eggs, embryos, and sperm. This collection of medical procedures is referred to as assisted reproductive technology(ART)
The various IVF treatments that are accessible are:
Natural cycle IVF procedure: In this treatment, fertility drugs are not administered. After the egg is released during the regular monthly cycle, it is gathered and fertilized.
Mild stimulation IVF procedure: After administering the lower dosage fertility medications, the eggs are retrieved and fertilized.
In vitro maturation (IVM): The immature ovaries are collected and then allowed to mature in the laboratory.
Embryo transfer: After fertilization, the embryos are removed and placed within the mother's womb.
Blastocyst transfer: The embryos are cultured in the laboratory until the blastocyst stage and then transferred to the mother’s womb.
The process begins with overstimulation of ovulation by the administration of fertility drugs to stimulate the ovaries. Normally, a woman produces one egg per month, but these drugs cause the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
After that Egg retrieval is performed through a minor surgery called follicular aspiration. Pain medications are given, and using ultrasound guidance, a thin needle attached to a suction pump is inserted through the vagina. The needle is directed toward the follicles containing the eggs, and the fluid and eggs are suctioned out.
Then sperm sample is prepared by removing inactive cells. The eggs and sperm are then incubated together in a ratio of 1:75,000.
After that Fertilization occurs when the sperm enters the egg. If the sperm is weak or there are other fertilization issues, an intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is performed, where a single sperm is directly injected into an egg.
Culturing of the Embryo is done After fertilization, the egg begins to divide and form an embryo. Over the next five days, the embryo continues to divide rapidly. Genetic diagnosis may be performed on the embryos 3-4 days after fertilization to check for any genetic disorders.
The embryos are transferred into the mother's womb three to five days following conception. A tiny tube holding the embryos is introduced into the womb through the vagina and cervix. if the embryo implants and grows it results in pregnancy.
