How Much Does Small Bowel Resection Cost in South Korea?

The cost of Robotic Hernia Surgery in South Korea typically ranges between USD 12000 - USD 22000. The cost depends on the infrastructure of the hospital, experience of the surgeon, type of anesthesia and diagnostic tests, and post operative follow-up. The severity of the diagnosis, length of hospital stay, and the need for close medical monitoring may also affect the procedure's financial impact.

Factors Affecting the Cost of Small Bowel Resection in South Korea

  • Hospital and Infrastructure: Tertiary and multispecialty hospitals typically charge higher fees because they tend to have more advanced technology, multiple specialities on staff, and comprehensive critical care services.
  • Surgeon's Experience: Generally speaking, the more experienced a surgeon is, the higher the cost of their services.
  • Type of Surgery: Open surgery, laparoscopy, and robotic surgery each have different levels of complexity, equipment requirements, and recovery times.
  • Pre-Surgical Assessment: Additional cost for imaging studies, blood testing, and any consultations with specialists prior to surgery.
  • Anesthesia and Operating Room Time: Procedures that are prolonged require longer operating room and anesthesiology services.
  • Postoperative follow-up care: This includes intensive care unit (ICU) stays, prescription medications, nutritional care, and longer hospitalisations, all of which increase costs after small bowel resection.

The purpose of this operation is to remove any parts of the small bowel (small intestine) that are either damaged or malignant (harmful to one's health) due to:

  • A blockage within the small bowel (a build-up of protein, fat or pieces of food blocking the continuing passage of materials along this organ)
  • Malignant tumours in the small bowel (a tumour is made up of cancer cells that have spread throughout the body), pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Crohn's Disease (a disease causing an inflammatory reaction within the gut)
  • Ischaemia (lack of blood flow to the area)

  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain
  • Recurrent vomiting or inability to pass stool
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Blood in stools
  • Chronic diarrhea or bowel obstruction symptoms

Preparation for this surgery will include testing for and preparing for, anaesthetic and blood type, X-ray, CT scan and MR scans, and bowel preparation. Prior to your procedure, your doctor may ask you to discontinue certain medications.

The surgery may be completed using an 'open' approach (an incision/procedure used for larger, more complex operations), or a 'laparoscopic' approach (using small instruments to perform the procedure with minimal incisions).

The time required to complete a small bowel resection ranges from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the complexity of the case and the surgical technique employed.

  • Infection or bleeding
  • Leakage at the bowel connection site
  • Bowel obstruction or adhesions
  • Blood clots
  • Nutritional deficiencies

It includes the removal of diseased or obstructed bowel, relief of pain and digestive symptoms, improved nutrient absorption, and prevention of serious complications.

Each patient is monitored during recovery and will have the opportunity to gradually resume oral food intake, receive medical treatment for pain, care for their surgical site, and receive dietary counselling. A patient will fully recover within several weeks; during this time, routine follow-ups are conducted.

The short-term success rates of small bowel resections (SBR) are high (greater than 90% in young adults), however, significant long-term complications can also occur. For example, the risk of adhesive obstructions in SBR patients is approximately 3 years, with 3-year recurrence-free survival rates of 86% and 7-year rates of 61.5%.

Process Involved for Small Bowel Resection in South Korea

  • Preoperative Assessment: The preoperative assessment includes laboratory tests (e.g., blood tests), imaging studies, and, in some cases, endoscopy. A fitness for anesthesia assessment will be completed. Patients also have their nutritional status evaluated; bowel preparation may be appropriate prior to surgery.
  • Surgical Intervention: The surgical procedure is carried out under general anesthesia through either an open (traditional) or minimally invasive approach. The portion of the small intestine that is diseased is removed, and the ends of the healthy intestine are connected together.
  • Post-Surgical Care: Post-surgery, patients are monitored for complications and for a gradual return to a diet of clear liquids and soft foods. Pain management, wound care, and mobility exercises will be implemented to support patients' recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Recovery time varies among individuals, with the absolute minimum of 3-4 weeks. Strength and digestion may improve gradually during this period. Returning to a normal routine and fully healing can take between six and eight weeks, depending on the type of surgery performed and the individual's overall health.

In addition to the procedure cost, patients may incur:
  • Pre-treatment tests
  • Medications during recovery
  • Follow-up consultations
  • The average hospital stay is typically 5-10 days, allowing time for physicians to monitor bowel function, manage pain, and assess for postoperative complications.

The ongoing type of medical attention required due to the possibility of digestive problems following a small bowel resection operation should be taken into consideration. This type of long-term care may include follow-up appointments to monitor recovery, dietary modifications, taking physician-prescribed nutritional supplements, and closely monitoring any digestive problems that develop.

In South Korea, we have access to modern, sophisticated surgical techniques; highly qualified healthcare professionals who specialise in gastrointestinal surgery; and state-of-the-art medical facilities. Patients receive complete continuity of care throughout their entire course of treatment (including any follow-up care needed). Patients will have access to an individualised treatment plan and the highest level of care.

Prior to surgery, the surgeon will typically order initial testing, which may include blood work, either a CT or MRI scan(s), endoscopy (if indicated), electrocardiogram and/or chest X-ray, and pre-operative clearance by the anaesthesiology department. This helps ensure that your diagnosis has been confirmed and that the safety of performing your surgery has been determined.

Yes, as long as your procedure is performed in an accredited hospital, your small bowel resection will be very safe for you as an international patient. The services offered by a dedicated department of International Patient Services provide you with all the necessary resources to ensure your care and treatment are optimal, safe, and properly coordinated.

The short-term success rates of small bowel resections (SBR) are high (greater than 90% in young adults); however, significant long-term complications can also occur.
