The nasal septum is the wall present in the nose that separates the nasal cavity into the right and left cavities. The nasal septum is composed of cartilage in the front portion and bone in the posterior part. Why septoplasty is performed?
A crooked septum is common, but a significantly deviated septum can block one side of the nose and reduce airflow, making it difficult to breathe through one or both nostrils.
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that straightens the nasal septum by trimming, repositioning, and replacing cartilage bone, or both.
Surgery to correct a deviated septum may be appropriate if your symptoms are impacting your quality of life, such as difficulty breathing through your nose or frequent nosebleeds.
There are different types of Septoplasty:
Septoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia. The type of anesthesia utilized and the duration of the surgery are determined by the complexity of the condition. The surgical process takes anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to perform. The standard technique is carried out in four steps.
Step 1: The surgeon is going to make an incision on one side of the nose to provide access to the septum. The mucous membrane (the septum's protective covering) has been raised from one side.
Step 2: An incision is made in the septum in front of the nasal deviation, and the nasal mucosal lining is pulled from the septum on the opposite side.
Step 3: Then the deviated septum will be repositioned to the midline position.
Step 3: Then, the deviated septum will be moved into the midline position. Barriers, such as excess bone or cartilage, will be eliminated.
Step 4: Finally, at last, the mucous membrane was adjusted. This is done via a variety of approaches. One way is to suture the membrane and septum to keep them in place. However, just filling the nose with cotton can occasionally keep them in place.
Septoplasty is mostly performed as an outpatient procedure, thus the patient may be discharged the same day once the anesthesia wears off.
To promote healing and minimize swelling, physical activity should be limited to several weeks post-surgery. Physical activity can raise blood pressure and can cause significant nasal bleeding.
