What is a Norwood Procedure, and how does it work?

The Norwood Procedure is a complex surgical procedure performed on newborns with a severe congenital heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). It is the first in a series of three heart surgeries known as the Norwood Series. The goal of these surgeries is to reconstruct the underdeveloped left side of the heart. During the Norwood Procedure, the surgeon creates a new, larger aorta and connects it to the pulmonary artery. This then allows the blood to flow to the lungs. The procedure helps improve oxygenation and circulation of the blood in the body.

What medical conditions can be treated through Norwood Procedure?

The Norwood Procedure is specifically used to treat infants diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). It is a complex cardiac condition where the left side of the heart is underdeveloped, impairing the ability to pump oxygenated blood to the body.

What is the recovery process after a Norwood Procedure?

Recovery after the Norwood Procedure is long and often challenging. As the surgery is performed on infants, intensive care is required in the cardiac ICU. The initial recovery period involves close monitoring of vital signs, oxygen levels, and heart function. Long-term recovery involves multiple follow-up visits to monitor the child's growth, development, and heart function. The subsequent surgeries in the Norwood Series are performed at later stages to further improve the heart's function and circulation. The recovery after Norwood can take weeks and will require extensive cardiac rehabilitation.
