How Much Does Nephrectomy Cost in Jordan?

The cost of a Nephrectomy (Kidney Removal Surgery) in Jordan generally ranges between USD 8000 - USD 15000, depending on the type of nephrectomy required (simple, partial, or radical), whether the procedure is performed through open surgery or minimally invasive laparoscopic/robotic techniques, the underlying kidney condition, the experience of the urologist, and the standards of the hospital or surgical centre.

Additional expenses such as pre-surgery investigations (blood tests, ultrasound, CT/MRI scans), anaesthesia charges, inpatient stay, post-operative medications, pathology examination of the removed tissue, follow-up visits, and management of any associated kidney or systemic conditions may also contribute to the final overall treatment cost.

Factors Influencing the Cost of Nephrectomy

  • Type of Nephrectomy: Costs vary depending on whether the procedure is a simple nephrectomy, a partial nephrectomy, or a radical nephrectomy.
  • Surgical Approach Used: Laparoscopic, robotic-assisted, or open surgery options carry different costs. Robotic-assisted nephrectomy generally costs more due to advanced technology and equipment.
  • Underlying Condition and Severity: The cost may increase if the surgery is performed for complex conditions such as kidney cancer, severe infection, large tumors, or congenital abnormalities requiring extensive surgical work.
  • Hospital or Surgical Centre Standards: Specialised urology centres with modern operating rooms, advanced imaging systems, and high safety standards typically have higher fees.
  • Surgeon’s Expertise: Experienced urologists or uro-oncologists with advanced training in minimally invasive or robotic nephrectomy may charge higher professional fees.
  • Pre-Surgical Evaluations: Investigations such as CT scans, MRI, kidney function tests, chest imaging, urine tests, and routine blood work contribute to the initial cost.
  • Anaesthesia Type and Duration: General anaesthesia for nephrectomy may vary in cost depending on the procedure's duration and complexity.
  • Use of Advanced Technology: Robotic surgical systems, high-definition laparoscopic tools, and image-guided instruments can significantly increase overall costs.
  • Post-Surgical Medications: Pain management, antibiotics, anticoagulants, and other medications prescribed after the surgery add to treatment expenses.
  • Hospital Stay Duration: Longer hospitalisation, especially after complex or open surgeries, results in higher charges for rooms, nursing, and ICU care.
  • Follow-Up Visits: Post-operative check-ups, wound assessments, imaging, and ongoing monitoring contribute to total expenditure.

A nephrectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of a kidney, typically performed to treat kidney cancer or to remove a benign tumor. A urologic surgeon performs this surgery.

There are different approaches to accessing the kidney. One method involves making a single large incision in the abdomen or side, known as an open nephrectomy. More commonly, the surgery is done through several small incisions in the abdomen, referred to as a laparoscopic nephrectomy. Sometimes, a robotic system is used for laparoscopic procedures. In robotic surgery, the surgeon operates surgical tools and a camera attached to robotic arms from a computer console near the operating table.

Types

There are two main types of Nephrectomy.

1)Radical nephrectomy: It removes the entire kidney.

2)Partial nephrectomy: It removes only a part of a kidney and leaves healthy tissue in place.

Why It's Done

A nephrectomy is most commonly performed to remove a tumor from the kidney, whether cancerous or benign. It can also be used to treat a diseased or damaged kidney. In addition, a nephrectomy is performed to remove a healthy kidney from a donor for transplantation into someone who needs a functioning kidney.
