Unilateral hip replacement surgery is conducted in patients who suffer from osteoarthritis of just one hip joint or those who have damaged or infected joint on one side of the hips.
A unilateral hip replacement surgery is less time intensive and serious than a bilateral hip replacement surgery, which involves removal and replacement of joints on both the sides of the hips.
During the unilateral hip replacement surgery, which is also known as hip arthroplasty, the affected side of the hip is cut open to expose the diseased hip joint. It is cut and removed before transplanting artificial prosthesis.
Some hip replacement surgeons may choose to use the cemented prosthesis, while others may choose uncemented prosthesis. Opening up the hip area to perform the surgery is not necessary if a minimally invasive technique is used to achieve the same objective.
Unilateral hip replacement surgery is the last treatment options for a patient who have not experienced any relief from constant hip pain through other alternative treatments such as physical therapy, exercising, and the use of painkillers.
Patients who experience the following symptoms are recommended to undergo unilateral hip replacement surgery:
Unilateral hip replacement surgery recovery time varies from one patient to the other. The success of this surgery hugely depends on your ability to follow the instructions given by the surgeon home care during the first few weeks after the procedure.
At the time of discharge, you will still have sutures and stitched under the skin. The doctor will removes stitches approximately two weeks after the surgery.
See that you do not wet the wound until it is sealed and dried. You can bandage the wound to avoid irritation from clothing or support stockings. The unilateral hip replacement recovery time is less as compared to bilateral surgery.
During the first few weeks of your surgery, make sure to perform the exercises advised by the doctor. You may experience a little discomfort during activity and at night for several weeks. You will be able to return to conduct light activities within three to six weeks after the surgery.
Pain after hip replacement surgery goes away gradually. You may be given medications to manage pain after the surgery for a few days until it goes away completely.
Ask your healthcare adviser for the best multiple options and choose the one that meets your expectations
Hungary is centrally situated in Central Europe making it an affordable place to live and settle. Hungary is comparatively cheaper than the US and UK which additionally affects the costing of the surgery. The patient spends a fraction of the cost of what they’d spend in the US and the UK with almost no waiting list and low cost of living. Over everything, Hungary has an all-inclusive healthcare system for every taxpayer which is similar to the NHS set up in England.
Private hospitals are equipped with state of the art modern technology and facilities, primarily because the German clients have been visiting the country for almost fifteen years now to take advantage of the highly competitive prices in healthcare services.
As Hungary is one of the most affordable medical tourism destinations, the US underwent a study to compare the cost of hip replacement surgery in Hungary. Most hospitals were protective of their data and expressed disinterest in sharing the overall cost of the same but the ones that did had a wide range of prices: the cheapest surgery was $11,100 and most expensive was $125,798.
There are different types of hip implants available today. The quality of the implant has improved tremendously in the last few decades. Because of the improved quality, the chances of complications arising out of implant failure, infection, and wear and tear has become next to negligible.
There are several medical device companies that manufacture hip implants. The cost of surgery, therefore, depends on whether the implant has been sourced from a company based in the country or from a manufacturer abroad.
Additionally, there are different materials of hip implants available today. Metal ball and polyethylene liners, ceramic ball and polyethylene liners, a metal ball and metal liner, and ceramic ball and ceramic liner are some of the types of implants available. While the choice of implant largely depends on the condition of the patient and the doctor’s recommendations, there are certain points that must be kept in mind.
The following are some of the things that should be kept in mind while selecting a hip implant:
Will it allow for normal motion and activities?
Will it last for at least 15 to 20 years?
Is it a familiar brand or manufacturer?
Does it have a good track record or used popularly for hip joint replacement?
Does it meet your medical condition or requirements?
Is it bio-compatible?
Hip Replacement surgeries have a longer lifeline than Knee Replacement surgery. 58% of them have been known to last for than 25 years. The average lifeline is mostly 15 years with metallic or plastic hip prostheses. The average success rate is 90%-95% after 10 years of prosthetic usage. With an effective procedure, these surgeries are almost successful. They can only go wrong in case of utter infection and clot formation. A clot can cause pulmonary embolism and ultimately death, therefore, utmost care should be taken to avoid infection and clot formation.
