Meniscus surgery is a frequent treatment used to remove or repair a torn meniscus, which is the cartilage in the knee. It involves making a few small incisions and typically takes about an hour. The most common procedure for a torn meniscus is knee arthroscopy, which typically takes less than an hour.
First, the Patient will receive anesthesia. The surgical team will clean the skin on the knee and cover the rest of the patient's leg with a surgical drape. A clamp may be placed on the upper thigh to aid positioning during the surgery.
The surgeon will make a few small incisions, called portals, in the patient’s knee. The knee joint will then be filled with a sterile fluid to control minor bleeding and wash away debris, improving visibility inside the joint.
A small tool called an arthroscope, which is a thin tube with a light and video camera at the end, will be inserted through one of the incisions. The camera projects video images from inside the patient’s knee onto a monitor.
