How Much Does Spinal Decompression and Fixation Cost in Vietnam?

In Vietnam, the cost of Spinal Decompression and Fixation typically falls between USD 8000 - USD 15000, depending on several variables, including the underlying spinal condition being treated, the number of spinal levels involved, whether the procedure is performed using open or minimally invasive techniques, the type of fixation devices or implants used, the hospital’s infrastructure, the spine surgeon’s expertise, and the overall complexity of the surgery.

The overall cost may also be impacted by additional expenses for pre-operative diagnostic evaluations and imaging (MRI/CT, X-rays), anaesthesia, hospital and ICU stays if required, use of specialised surgical instruments and implants, post-operative medications, physiotherapy or rehabilitation, and follow-up consultations.

Factors Influencing the Cost of Spinal Decompression and Fixation

  • Type of Spinal Decompression Procedure: Costs vary depending on the technique used, such as laminectomy, discectomy, foraminotomy, or minimally invasive decompression combined with fixation. Multi-level decompressions and complex procedures are typically more expensive.
  • Underlying Spinal Condition: The condition being treated significantly influences overall costs. Severe nerve compression or instability often requires more extensive surgical intervention.
  • Hospital and Location: Leading spine centres in cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang may charge higher fees due to advanced operating rooms, intraoperative neuromonitoring, spinal navigation systems, and comprehensive ICU and rehabilitation facilities.
  • Surgeon’s Expertise: Highly experienced orthopaedic spine surgeons or neurosurgeons specialising in complex spinal procedures may command higher surgical fees, reflecting their expertise and clinical outcomes.
  • Implants and Fixation Hardware: The type, number, and brand of fixation devices play a major role in determining total costs. Premium implant systems increase overall expenses.
  • Complexity of the Case: Patients with multilevel disease, prior spinal surgery, deformities, or associated neurological deficits may require longer operative times, staged procedures, or advanced intraoperative imaging, thereby increasing treatment costs.
  • Hospital Stay and Post-Operative Care: Duration of hospitalisation, ICU monitoring (if required), physiotherapy, pain management, follow-up consultations, imaging, and post-surgical medications all contribute to the total treatment expense.

A surgical technique called spinal decompression and fixation is used to support the spine and relieve pressure on the spinal nerves. Herniated discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, fractures, and spondylolisthesis are among the disorders for which it is commonly performed. To stabilise the spine and stop additional movement and pain, a piece of the bone or disc material is removed, compressing the nerves (decompression). This is followed by the use of screws, rods, plates, or bone grafts (fixation).

From the cervical region of the neck to the lumbar region of the lower back, spinal decompression can be carried out anywhere on the spine.

A surgical incision is made in the posterior region of the back to perform the treatment. The bone that forms the rear of the spinal canal and serves as a roof over the spinal cord is called the lamina. Bone spurs can be removed and more space for nerves is created by removing the lamina and other soft tissues. Depending on the degree of stenosis, one vertebra (single-level) or more (multi-level) may be affected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Spinal Decompression and Fixation is a specialised neurosurgical or orthopaedic spine procedure performed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves and stabilise the spine.
Decompression removes structures such as herniated discs, bone spurs, or thickened ligaments that compress neural elements, while fixation (fusion) uses screws, rods, or plates to stabilise the affected spinal segments.
The procedure aims to reduce pain, restore function, prevent spinal instability, and improve quality of life in patients with severe spinal disorders.

Spinal Decompression and Fixation in Vietnam is commonly used to treat:
  • Degenerative disc disease causing nerve compression
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis (slipped vertebra)
  • Herniated discs cause persistent back or leg pain
  • Spinal fractures or instability
  • Tumours of the spine causing compression
  • Spinal deformities requiring correction
  • The treatment typically involves:
  • Pre-procedure evaluation: MRI, CT scans, X-rays, neurological assessment, and pain evaluation
  • Surgical approach: Removal of compressive elements such as herniated discs, bone spurs, or ligaments
  • Spinal fixation (fusion): Use of rods, screws, plates, or cages to stabilise the spine and promote fusion
  • Intraoperative monitoring: Continuous neurophysiological monitoring to protect spinal cord and nerve function
  • Post-surgical care: Intensive monitoring followed by physiotherapy and rehabilitation
  • The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia by experienced spine surgeons or neurosurgeons specialising in spinal surgery.

Although generally safe, Spinal Decompression and Fixation carries potential risks, including:
  • Infection at the surgical site
  • Bleeding or hematoma formation
  • Nerve injury leading to weakness, numbness, or paralysis
  • Non-union or failure of spinal fusion
  • Persistent pain or recurrence of symptoms
  • Blood clots or complications related to anaesthesia
  • Careful patient selection, advanced surgical techniques, and structured rehabilitation help minimise complications.

Leading hospitals and spine centres in Vietnam offering spinal decompression and fixation include:
  • Vinmec Hai Phong
  • Vinmec Ha Long Hospital
  • Vinmec Central Park International Hospital
  • Vinmec Times City
  • Vinmec Smart City Hospital
  • These centres have multidisciplinary spine teams, advanced operating theatres, and modern spinal instrumentation for complex spine surgeries.

The duration of treatment depends on individual patient factors:
  • Pre-surgical evaluation: 1-2 weeks
  • Surgery duration: 2-6 hours, depending on the complexity and number of levels
  • Hospital stay: 3-7 days
  • Recovery and rehabilitation: Several weeks to months for optimal mobility and fusion
  • Most patients experience significant pain relief and improved function within weeks after surgery, though full recovery may take several months.

    Additional costs may include:
  • Pre-operative imaging and neurological assessments
  • ICU or extended hospital stay if needed
  • Medications and pain management
  • Physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs
  • Post-operative follow-up visits and spinal imaging
  • Additional hardware or implants for multi-level fusion
  • The leading cities in Vietnam for spinal decompression and fixation procedures include:
  • Hanoi
  • Ho Chi Minh City
  • These cities offer access to advanced spine surgery programs, specialised spine surgeons, and comprehensive rehabilitation facilities.

Vietnam is emerging as a trusted destination for complex spinal surgery because of:
  • Access to experienced spine surgeons and multidisciplinary teams
  • Modern surgical technology and minimally invasive spinal instruments
  • High-quality treatment at significantly lower costs than in many countries
  • Comprehensive post-operative care and rehabilitation programs
  • International patient support services for guidance and coordination
  • The success rate of spinal decompression and fixation in Vietnam is high, with 70-90% of patients experiencing significant pain relief, improved mobility, and spinal stability.
Outcomes depend on the underlying condition, the number of levels involved, surgical technique, and adherence to post-operative rehabilitation.
