How Much Does Kyphoplasty Cost in Vietnam?

In Vietnam, the cost of Kyphoplasty typically falls between USD 2500 - USD 5000, depending on several variables, including the underlying condition being treated (such as osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures, traumatic fractures, or pathological fractures due to tumors), the number of vertebrae involved, whether the procedure is performed at single or multiple levels, the type and quantity of bone cement used, the hospital’s infrastructure, the spine or orthopedic surgeon’s expertise, and the overall complexity of the procedure.

The overall cost may also be impacted by additional expenses for pre-procedure diagnostic evaluations and imaging (MRI/CT, X-rays), anaesthesia or sedation, hospital stay (often short), use of specialised kyphoplasty equipment, post-procedure medications, physiotherapy if required, and follow-up consultations.

Factors Influencing the Cost of Kyphoplasty

  • Underlying Condition: Costs vary depending on the cause of the vertebral fracture, such as osteoporotic compression fractures, traumatic fractures, or pathological fractures due to tumors. Multiple vertebrae involvement typically increases the cost.
  • Type of Procedure and Equipment: The use of specialised kyphoplasty balloons, high-viscosity bone cement, and fluoroscopic guidance can influence the overall procedural cost.
  • Hospital and Location: Leading hospitals in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang charge higher fees due to modern operating rooms, imaging facilities, and experienced spine or orthopaedic teams.
  • Surgeon’s Expertise: Experienced spine or orthopaedic surgeons skilled in minimally invasive vertebral augmentation may charge higher consultation and surgical fees.
  • Complexity of the Case: Patients with severe vertebral collapse, multi-level fractures, or prior spine surgeries may require longer operative time, additional equipment, or advanced imaging, increasing the total cost.
  • Post-Operative Care: Hospital stay (often short), post-procedure medications, physiotherapy or rehabilitation, and follow-up imaging and consultations all contribute to the overall treatment expense.

Kyphoplasty is also known as balloon kyphoplasty. It is a minimally-invasive surgical procedure that can repair spinal fractures caused by cancer, osteoporosis, or benign lesions. It is not used for spinal stenosis treatment.

Kyphoplasty procedure is designed to relieve the intense pain caused by vertebral compression fractures, to stabilize the bone or to bring back some or all of the lost vertebral body height due to the compression fracture. Kyphoplasty or balloon kyphoplasty is a superb replacement of the typical conventional therapies such as analgesic use, bed rest, and bracing. It is a quick remedy for severe pain due to vertebral compression. It eliminates the pain almost immediately and the risk of complications during kyphoplasty is low. However, it is not intended for the treatment of arthritis or intervertebral disc disease. Kyphoplasty is different from discectomy, which is conducted in case of a herniated disc. Discectomy completely removes the damaged or herniated disc from the vertebrae of the patient.

Laminectomy and vertebroplasty are two other procedures that follow different techniques for stabilizing fractures. Laminectomy works by removing the lamina to create space, vertebroplasty works by injecting cement into the broken or cracked spine. For the same reason, vertebroplasty cost is different from kyphoplasty cost.

Who is the best candidate for kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty is typically suggested in case of:

  • Severe pain that cannot be controlled by pain-relieving medications
  • Severe functional restraints such as inability to walk or stand
  • Fractures resulting in loss of height and alignment
  • Multiple fractures in spine
  • Fractures with radical collapse
  • Fractures located at the thoracolumbar junction
  • Spondylolisthesis, that is, displacement of one vertebra over another

Frequently Asked Questions

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive spine procedure used to treat painful vertebral compression fractures, most commonly caused by osteoporosis, spinal trauma, or cancer-related bone weakening.
The procedure involves inserting a small balloon into the fractured vertebra to restore height, followed by injection of medical-grade bone cement to stabilise the bone. The primary goal of kyphoplasty is to relieve pain, restore spinal alignment, and improve mobility.

Kyphoplasty in Vietnam is commonly used to treat:
  • Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures
  • Spinal fractures due to trauma or injury
  • Vertebral collapse caused by spinal tumours or metastasis
  • Multiple myeloma-related spinal fractures
  • Painful spinal deformities causing kyphosis (hunched posture)
  • Kyphoplasty treatment typically involves:
  • Pre-procedure evaluation: X-rays, MRI or CT scans, and clinical assessment
  • Balloon insertion: A small incision is made, and a balloon is inserted into the fractured vertebra
  • Vertebral height restoration: The balloon is gently inflated to create space and correct deformity
  • Cement injection: Bone cement is injected to stabilise the vertebra
  • Post-procedure monitoring: Observation and pain assessment after surgery
  • The procedure is usually performed under local or general anaesthesia and often completed within a short duration.

Kyphoplasty is generally safe, but potential risks may include:
  • Cement leakage (rare and usually asymptomatic)
  • Infection or bleeding at the injection site
  • Nerve irritation or injury
  • Allergic reaction to the materials used
  • Adjacent vertebral fractures over time
  • Careful imaging guidance and experienced spine surgeons significantly reduce these risks.

Leading hospitals and spine centres in Vietnam offering kyphoplasty include:
  • Vinmec Hai Phong
  • Vinmec Ha Long Hospital
  • Vinmec Central Park International Hospital
  • Vinmec Times City
  • Vinmec Smart City Hospital
  • These hospitals are equipped with advanced facilities for minimally invasive spine interventions.

The duration of kyphoplasty treatment varies depending on the number of vertebrae treated:
  • Procedure time: 45-90 minutes
  • Hospital stay: Same day or 1-2 days
  • Pain relief: Often within 24-48 hours
  • Return to daily activities: Within a few days
  • Full recovery: 2-4 weeks
  • Most patients experience rapid and significant pain reduction.

    Additional costs may include:
  • Diagnostic imaging and fracture assessment
  • Hospital stay and post-procedure care
  • Medications for pain management
  • Follow-up consultations and imaging
  • Physiotherapy and osteoporosis management, if required
  • The leading cities in Vietnam for kyphoplasty procedures include:
  • Hanoi
  • Ho Chi Minh City
  • Da Nang
  • These cities offer modern spine centres with expertise in minimally invasive fracture treatment.

Vietnam is an increasingly preferred destination for kyphoplasty because of:
  • High-quality spine care at affordable costs
  • Experienced spine surgeons and interventional specialists
  • Advanced imaging and minimally invasive techniques
  • International-standard hospitals
  • Patient-focused care with faster recovery
  • The success rate of kyphoplasty in Vietnam is high, with most patients experiencing significant pain relief, improved spinal stability, and better mobility.
Outcomes depend on fracture severity, bone quality, and adherence to post-procedure care and osteoporosis management.
