A lung transplant is a surgical procedure that replaces a diseased or failing lung with a healthy one from a deceased donor. Procedures may include single lung transplant (in which one lung is transplanted) or double lung transplant (where both lungs are transplanted), depending on the patient's case. General anesthesia performs lung transplant. Once blood flow and breathing are restored, the chest is closed and the patient is moved to intensive care for monitoring.

It usually takes 4 to 8 hours to accomplish a lung transplant. It could take up to 12 hours if both lungs are transplanted or if there are difficulties.
