Skin rejuvenation is a laser/cosmetic treatment that aims to restore the youthfulness of your skin.With growing age, the skin suffers abrasions in the form of wrinkles, sun damage, stretch marks and acne scars.
Copious production of collagen in the skin tissues gradually slow down the skin cells and leads to accumulation of dead cells. It, thus, causes imperfections and dullness of the skin, spots and an overall lifeless complexion. Therefore, skin rejuvenation is inevitable which can be attained through various processes such as laser resurfacing, chemical peels and mechanical rejuvenation/microdermabrasion.
Laser resurfacing technique shoots concentrated, short pulsating beams at the affected or irregular skin area for removing dead skin cells and damaged cells layer by layer. Microdermabrasion, on the other hand, is a non-invasive and non-chemical procedure that uses sprays of microcrystals to eliminate dead skin cells lying at the uppermost crust of the skin so that a healthier-looking and youthful skin is revealed.
Who are eligible to opt for skin rejuvenation laser treatment?
Laser skin treatment is suitable for both the sexes, men and women, who have developed wrinkles or fine lines around the mouth or on the forehead or around the eyes. Acne can damage your skin gravely by leaving deep and shallow scars which can be eliminated with laser resurfacing. It is advisable to consult a doctor about your skin condition before opting for the treatment since laser resurfacing is an aggressive procedure. Doctors usually do not suggest the treatment until candidates reach 50 years of age.
A partial laser skin treatment takes thirty to forty minutes, while a full treatment takes up to two hours. Before the treatment starts, the patient is provided with eye shields that are worn on the eyes to ensure protection to retinas and corneas from laser. A wand is passed over your skin when the abrasive treatment such as laser resurfacing is done.
Typically, there are two types of devices – ablative lasers and nonablative lasers (used in case of microdermabrasion) used for laser skin resurfacing. Ablative lasers are used to remove thin layers of surface skin with each passing of wand. Nonablative lasers used for microdermabrasions, on the other hand, eliminate wrinkles or fine lines, but do not remove skin.
Post treatment, the resurfaced skin area is covered with petroleum jelly or any other protective ointment which the doctor knows the best. If necessary, dressing tape or bandage is applied too.
Since it is an abrasive treatment, patients are prescribed pain medications and the treated areas are bandaged up to four to five days post-treatment. However, in case of microdermabrasion, no pain medication or bandage is required.
Ablative laser resurfacing has side effects that include swelling, itching, redness of the area, fungal/bacterial infection, and even changes in skin color. The treated skin may become darker or pigmented post-surgery. Besides, applying thick creams on the face may catapult acne growth. Non-ablative laser resurfacing, on the other hand, is a safe procedure and has minimal side effects.
