Team MediGence is very supportive and helpful. Right from the start of the decision-making process to select the best doctor and hospital for my surgery, they assisted me.
Canadian national Christine, 51, struggled carrying out her normal life routine due to obesity.
Christine was based in Canada until 2015 but shifted to Bangkok 4 years ago. She works as a school teacher by Profession. Excessive body weight has been a constant challenge for Christine in carrying out regular chores and day-to-day routines. She believed that losing the extra pounds can not only make her look great but will also enable her to perform day-to-day tasks more comfortably and efficiently.
This is why she underwent Gastric Sleeve Surgery in 2015 in Canada initially, after which she moved to Bangkok. However, she started to gain weight again in just two years after the surgery due to inability to stick to the guidelines. When she was no longer able to lose weight after 4 years of the surgery, she decided to go for a Gastric Bypass Surgery.
Gastric Bypass Surgery is a surgical procedure in which a small pouch is created in the stomach using a stapling device. The small pouch limits the amount of food the stomach can hold at a time, therefore, limiting the amount you can eat. Also, the small intestine is divided into two sections. The lower section of the small intestine is connected to the newly created stomach pouch so that the food may pass directly into the small intestine where digestion continues. The upper portion of the small intestine is connected to the lower portion of the stomach. The bile and pancreatic fluid received via this channel allow food to be digested quickly.
Following her decision to undergo a redo weight loss surgery, Christine contacted MediGence through an online query form. Upon receiving her query, MediGence team contacted her to take her history and preferences. The team then provided her with the options of hospitals and doctors for her surgery. Following the recommendations as provided by MediGence healthcare experts, Christine chose Dr. Vinay Shaw, General Surgeon from Medeor Hospital Qutub, Delhi.
Christine arrived in India on the 9th of October. She was picked by MediGence Patient Care team upon arrival and was comfortably accommodated in the hotel. Her first consultation with Dr. Shaw took place on the 10th of October. Post the consultation, she went for a blood test and contrast MRI as recommended by Dr. Shaw to ensure that her body is fit for the surgery and confirm the approach to follow for the surgery.
As per the medical report, Christine’s Body Mass Index (BMI) was recorded as 47.1 which was way above the normal BMI range. Considering the fact that the Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery done earlier wasn’t effective, the Gastric Bypass Surgery seemed to be a viable option.
Her Abdominal CT Scan with Contrast was also conducted to evaluate if the stomach pouch size is adequate for the surgery and to check the after-effects of the last surgery done in 2015. The results of the CT Scan were fine and surgery was scheduled to be conducted on the 11th of October 2019.
The surgery was carried out successfully on the 11th of October 2019 as scheduled. Christine was kept in the ICU for 1 day under close observation after which she was shifted into her private room, where she stayed for 2 days.
She was followed up for a check-up by Dr. Shaw on the 14th of October and thereafter, was discharged on the same day post-check-up.
Christine also had a detailed conversation with a Dietician who advised her of the guidelines to be followed post-surgery for a steady recovery and maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle.
Christine’s stitches were removed 3 days after her surgery and she was advised to take supplements like vitamins and proteins as well as adopt certain healthy lifestyle changes to achieve the desired results after the procedure. Christine showed a progressive recovery. Subsequently, during the initial week after the surgery itself, Christine had lost about 10 Kgs.
Christine was satisfied with the overall hospital facility and doctors. She also found MediGence team to be very supportive and helpful, right from the start of the decision-making process to select the doctor and hospital for her surgery to the end of the treatment.
Christine flew back to Bangkok on the 23rd of October 2019. As of now, she has lost about 23 kgs since the day of the surgery.
MediGence wishes Christine a happy and healthy future ahead!
